World of Outlaws Premier Chevy Dealers Clash
Race Recap
NUMBER NINE FROM EIGHTH: David Gravel Charges to Knoxville World of Outlaws Win
The defending champion wheels from eighth to pull within one of double-digit victories in 2025
Nothing was going to stop David Gravel on Friday night.
A poor draw in the Toyota Dash can signal the end of a driver’s chances at winning with how competitive Sprint Car racing has become. The difficulty grows even more at a track like Knoxville Raceway that attracts some of the strongest fields the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series sees all year.
That was exactly the case on Friday as 64 cars piled in the Knoxville pits for the Premier Chevy Dealers Clash, and a bad Dash draw was in store for Gravel as he pulled the seven. The Toyota Dash didn’t go much better as the Big Game Motorsports No. 2 slipped to eighth.
That lined him up outside row four with seven of the best ahead, but Gravel is among the best. In fact, he might be the best right now as the defending champion with The Greatest Show on Dirt that’s shown no signs of slowing down. The Watertown, CT native engineered a masterful drive to the front and sealed the deal with a Lap 20 pass on Kerry Madsen for the top spot. The “Madman” tried to fight back but had no answer. Gravel drove away to his ninth checkered flag of the season.
“I felt really good,” Gravel said. “From Lap 5 to Lap 20 I felt awesome. In the beginning I was alright, and at the end I was feeling a little weird, but we were the best car there for 15 or 20 laps by far. We could move around, charge the corner hard on the bottom and carry speed. I’ve got to thank Cody (Jacobs), Zach (Patterson), and Pete (Stephens) and Scott (Vogelsong) this week for helping us out. Tod’s (Quiring) here. He’s been wanting to win races, so here’s a win for you, Tod.”
That win for Quiring once again tied his Big Game Motorsports team with Roth Motorsports at 118 for the fifth most victories as an organization in Series history. Gravel upped his personal total to 112 and pulled within 10 of equaling Danny Lasoski for sixth most all-time. His 13th overall Feature win at Knoxville tied him with Justin Henderson for 28th all-time at the historic half mile. And one week after Wisconsin troubles allowed Michael “Buddy” Kofoid to cut into Gravel’s point lead, Gravel added 22 markers back on to grow the gap to 174 points.

Kerry Madsen continued his recent hot streak with a second place finish aboard the Vermeer-Madsen Racing No. 55V. The Sydney, NSW, Australia native has eight top fives in his last nine Sprint Car starts. It was his second runner-up in 10 days with The Greatest Show on Dirt to go along with the one he secured at Jackson Motorplex last Wednesday. Madsen thought a single slip up in traffic may have cost him his first World of Outlaws triumph in four years.
“I think I screwed up,” Madsen admitted. “I thought I had a run in lapped traffic, and when I peeled off to make the move, I didn’t have the run I thought I did and that’s how David got me. But watching him after he got us, he was probably a little bit better than us anyway. Obviously, if you’re in front, that’s all that counts but gave up the spot, and he kind of pulled away from us. Still a great run for us.”
Rico Abreu continued his recent hot streak by rounding out the Knoxville podium. The St. Helena, CA native has finished within the top three in six of his last seven races on the Marion County Fairground. Abreu battled a couple issues early in the 25-lapper but still brought home another strong finish.
“I was just trying to keep up with pace and work on my footwork,” Abreu explained. “The race slowed down, and we caught traffic. Lapped traffic was moving around. Kerry was getting through it pretty good. I just felt like I was getting number and number as the pace slowed down. Then I couldn’t get off (Turn) 2, and then I started searching and got in a little trouble. It’s like my normal aggressiveness to run the bottom just wasn’t there. I was just a little impatient to wait down there when guys were kind of blasting across it. I just felt like I slowed down enough to let the 2 catch me, and that changed the whole pace of the race there.”
Carson Macedo and Corey Day completed the top five.
Donny Schatz took the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing No. 15 from 25th to 15th to earn KSE Racing Products Hard Charger honors.
Tyler Courtney claimed Simpson Quick Time honors in Honest Abe Roofing Qualifying.
Heat Races belonged to Tyler Courtney (NOS Energy Drink Heat One), Carson Macedo (Real American Beer Heat Two), Ryan Timms (WIX Filters Heat Three), and Rico Abreu (TheGreateastStoreonDirt.com Heat Four).
The #SPATechnique #1 Redraw went to Austin McCarl.
Giovanni Scelzi topped the Toyota Dash.
Sheldon Haudenschild won the Micro-Lite Last Chance Showdown.
The Smith Titanium Brake Systems Break of the Race also went to Haudenschild.

Knoxville Raceway
The Sprint Car Capital of the World!
Knoxville, Iowa
1000 North Lincoln Street , 50138
The Knoxville Raceway, located on the Marion County Fairgrounds, began as a track for horse racing. The first automobile race was held in 1901. Johnny Gerber and "Speed" Adams were among the drivers featured between 1927 and 1936 during racing’s growth in popularity.
Racing came to a halt in the early 1940s due to the war, and returned late in the decade with hot rod racing. Soon after, midget and stock car racing became common.
In 1954, weekly racing began at the Knoxville Raceway. By this time, lighting was added to the track, along with new fencing. Stock car racing was the primary attraction, which were passenger cars stripped of glass, innards and extra metal. Roll cages were often constructed inside the car as a safety precaution.
Events at the Knoxville Raceway were promoted by the Southern Iowa Stock Car Racing Association until 1956, when Marion Robinson took over as promoter. During Robinson's tenure, "modifieds", (a stock car with modifications made to the engine), and "supermodifieds" (modifieds with the car bodies cut away to eliminate weight), were the rage. Eventually, tubing replaced the car frames, giving way to the sprint car as we know it today. Under Robinson's leadership, the Knoxville Nationals were born.
P. Ray Grimes came into leadership at the Knoxville Raceway in 1974, promoting races until 1977. Grimes' legacy includes extending the length of the Knoxville Nationals to four days.
1977 brought about a new Race Director, Ralph Capitani. Capitani continued to build on the growth of his predecessors, increasing the payoff for the 4-day Knoxville Nationals event to $100,000. The first tape-delayed broadcast of the Nationals was in 1987, with the first live broadcast in 1993.
Known as the "Sprint Car Capital of the World," Knoxville Raceway is home to the most prestigious Sprint Car event on the planet—the Knoxville Nationals, often called "The Granddaddy of 'Em All." For Sprint Car racing, it's the equivalent of the Super Bowl.
Each August, more than 100 Sprint Cars from across the country descend on Knoxville to chase one of the sport's biggest prizes. While it doesn't offer the richest winner's check, the Knoxville Nationals boasts the largest overall purse in Sprint Car racing, with more than $1 million on the line.
The legendary half-mile also keeps fans entertained all season long as a weekly racing destination featured on DIRTVision, bringing Knoxville's action to race fans around the world.
