Sides Nearly Scores First World of Outlaws Win of Season, Extends Top-10 Streak to Nine Straight

Inside Line Promotions – PLYMOUTH, Ind. (May 1, 2017) – Jason Sides was two laps away from winning his first World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series event of the season last Friday at Plymouth Speedway.

Sides led 28 laps of the 35-lap main event, but he was passed with two laps remaining during his second career appearance at the bullring. He settled for a runner-up result, which marked his best result of the season and his ninth consecutive top-10 finish with the World of Outlaws.

“To lead that many laps and have it taken away in the last two laps stings a little,” he said. “The next time we get in that position hopefully we can get it done.”

Sides said he was in a rush all day.

“We dropped a car off that we wrecked at Volusia Speedway Park in February at Maxim Friday morning not realizing how far it was from the track,” he said. “We didn’t pull into the race track until 5:15 p.m. It was a rush all night. The motor we had in there had a few issues with a water fitting. It was blowing back on the motor and through the dash. They blew the horn for the dash and we didn’t have the fitting in it yet. With that being said it was a rushed night and we really never changed much at all.”

Sides qualified fifth quickest overall before he won both a heat race and the dash after starting on the outside of the front row. That lined him up on the pole for the main event.

Sides quickly took the lead and held the top spot for the first nine laps before losing the lead in traffic to Donny Schatz. However, Sides regained the point on a restart on Lap 16 and he maintained an advantage until heavy traffic in the closing laps allowed David Gravel to take over the lead on Lap 34.

“That late in the race, in traffic and everything starting to slow down, we’re trying not to run up on a lapped car that quick,” Sides said. “Gravel could see that and he made the most of it. I’ve won them like that in his position a few times. It’s heartbreaking.”

The second-place finish was his second podium result and fourth top five this season. He now has a nine-race top-10 streak, which is his best streak since capturing nine top 10s in a row in August and September of 2010.

The next streak is 12 straight top 10s, which occurred in June and July of 2009.

Saturday’s event at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind., was postponed to May 14 because of rain.

Sides is slated to compete this Wednesday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark., for the Bull Ring Outlaw Blitz; on Friday at Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, Mo., for the Sedalia Show-Me Showdown; and on Saturday at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kan., for the Kansas Outlaw Klassic with the World of Outlaws.
