Kinser Edges Haudenschild at Ocean Speedway for Win No. 550
Steve Kinser and Jac Haudenschild have had some very entertaining and memorable battles over the last 30 years with the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, and they added another one to this list on Friday night in the series return to Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, California.
Kinser, who took the lead from Danny Lasoski on the ninth lap, fended off a couple of challenges from Haudenschild to pick up his 550th career A-Feature win with the World of Outlaws. The margin of victory was just three-tenths of a second on the tight ¼-mile bullring.
“It’s always fun to run with Haud,” said Kinser with a smile. “We have had some fun ones over the years. We’re both fortunate that we are able to stand up in the seat and still get the job done once in a while.”
Kinser started sixth in the 40-lap contest aboard the Q Oil Maxim, but moved up to the outside of the front row after Daryn Pittman and Terry McCarl who lined up second and fourth got together on the initial start bringing out a red flag. On the second start, Kinser won a drag race down the front straightaway with Danny Lasoski and led high into turn one. Lasoski dove under him in the second corner to take the lead, which he would hold for the first eight laps.
On the ninth lap, Kinser looked high on Lasoski for the lead in turn three and then dove under him exiting turn four to take the point as the pair negotiated lapped traffic. He would lead the rest of the way, though Haudenschild closed in late.
Haudenschild made a bid for the lead on the 35th lap, on the high side of turns one and two, drawing even Kinser. He used the same line on the next lap to inch ahead of Kinser on the back straightaway as the latter was held up by a lapped car. As the pair entered turns three and four Haudenschild was bottled up, allowing Kinser to get back by. Haudenschild battled back and rode the high side of the track for the last three laps of the race as he tried to catch Kinser.
“I didn’t realize the top was quite that good,” noted the winner. “I was pacing myself and I was getting pretty loose coming off of (turn) two. It got so slow getting in the middle there that you had to wait on it and hit the moisture on the bottom that it killed too much speed. That allowed Haud to get a good run on us there at the end.”
Kinser had one tense moment just past the halfway point of the 40-lap contest as Sam Hafertepe Jr. nearly spun in front of him, as he tried to put the second-year driver a lap down. After getting on the brakes to avoid him in turn four, Kinser dove under Hafertepe on the front straightaway to put him a lap down.
“You just have to watch them when you get that many cars on a little track like this,” said the native of Bloomington, Indiana. “You have to keep your eyes open. I saw the (No.) 15H get sideways once and a couple of others. Everything went all right and we got a win and that’s what counts.”
A couple of cautions during the race gave Kinser clean race track to work with, though his car was also operating very well in lapped traffic. He used strong restarts each time to quickly open a lead en route to the $10,000 victory.
“It was rolling pretty good,” he said. “I could have gotten smoothed out a little bit on top, but I had not been running up there. Jac just about cleared me enough that I was able to get back under him going into (turn) three. He got hung up a little coming off two and that let us get back into the lead. The top was open and I went there. I just couldn’t sit on the bottom or he would have passed me.”
The win for Kinser was his seventh of the season as he is solidly in the third spot in the championship standings with four races remaining in 2008. It was also his 31st Top-Five finish to go along with 45 Top-10 runs in 59 A-Feature events.
“Right now we are trying to get ready for next year,” explained Kinser. “That is what we have been doing for the last couple months. We had a tough start to the year. We’ve been pretty strong since about the halfway point of the season. We seem to be in the Top-Five most races over the last month and a half.”
Haudenschild had the crowd on their feet on Friday night as he tried everything he could to pick up the win. He would up second in the Owens-Corning Fiberglass Maxim for the second straight race.
“The car felt good tonight and has felt good all year long,” said Haudenschild. “We are really glad to be driving that car. Leonard (Lee) and Marie (LaPointe) have it working good. We have a good race car and have been hanging in there up front all year long.”
Danny Lasoski led the first eight laps on Friday night aboard the DTR Transport KPC, after winning the Crane Cams Dash to earn the pole position. He got mired in lapped traffic early in the race, allowing Kinser and Haudenschild to gain ground on him, after he quickly jumped out to a comfortable lead in the first four laps.
“We’re happy for the Dennis Roth team,” said the 2001 World of Outlaws champion. “The bottom is line that we left it too loose and they could move around in traffic. That’s what cost me the lead to begin with.”
Lasoski’s teammate Tim Kaeding came all the way from the 13th starting spot to finish to finish fourth.
Jason Meyers was fifth to earn his series-best 46th Top-Five finish of the season. He also gained 16 points on Donny Schatz, who finished 13th after taking a provisional to start the A-Feature, in the series standings and now trails the two-time defending series champion by 122 markers with four events remaining in 2008.
Lucas Wolfe was sixth aboard the Allebach Racing Maxim in his debut at Ocean Speedway. Paul McMahan was seventh in the Casey’s General Store Maxim, with Brooke Tatnell in eighth driving the Snap-on Tools Maxim. Randy Hannagan, who began the night by setting fast time in time trials, was ninth in the Penthouse Maxim. Jonathan Allard rounded out the Top-10 driving the Weld Wheels Maxim.
Haudenschild ran the high side of the track for a good portion of the race and moved up from his third starting spot to second on a lap 24 restart, powering his way around Lasoski. He continued to use the high line as he battled Kinser, even bouncing off the wall on the back straightaway as the pair battled for the lead.
“We got up there in the wall a little bit running on the high side,” shared the veteran driver.” I think Steve (Kinser) saw my nose up there and then covered the race track pretty good from there. Steve just doesn’t make any mistakes and he is hard to pass.”
Haudenschild was able to gain a significant amount of ground while the leaders were traffic. He also fended off an early race challenge from Jason Meyers, en route to 20th Top-Five finish of the season.
“The traffic makes the whole race,” he said. “That is the fun of racing on a short is that you are racing in traffic the whole time.”
For Lasoski, it was his first race behind the wheel of the famed No. 83 machine this season for Dennis Roth’s team. The 2001 series champion won six times for the team last season and was third in points.
“I’m very happy and thankful for Dennis and Teresa Roth for giving me this opportunity,” said Lasoski.
The Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series returns to action on Saturday night at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, California.

• FAST QUALIFIER: Randy Hannagan paced the 42 cars that took time with an AMB i.t. timed lap around the semi-banked 1/4-mile oval at 11.618 seconds at 77.466 mph. For his qualifying effort, Hannagan earned five bonus points. The next four fastest qualifiers also earned bonus points, including: Lucas Wolfe (4), Steve Kinser (3), Bobby McMahan (2), and Joey Saldana (1).
