At A Glance: Outlaws Navigate North

The World of Outlaws Craftsman® Late Model Series heads to Weedsport Speedway (N.Y.) on Tuesday, June 21 and Lernerville Speedway (Pa.) from Thursday, June 23 to Saturday, June 25

CONCORD, N.C. – June 20, 2016 – The World of Outlaws Craftsman® Late Model Series returns with a jam-packed week of shootouts – more than half the week scheduled with events. The series will first tackle the Finger Lakes 40 at Weedsport Speedway (N.Y.) on Tuesday, June 21. Then, the Outlaws will invade Lernerville Speedway for a three-day showing of the Firecracker 100 presented by GottaRace.com from Thursday, June 23 to Saturday, June 25.

Full time driver and 2015 Series Champion Shane Clanton dominated the Finger Lakes 40 last season, leading the field to the checkers by a 1.659 margin. Clanton was in control even prior to the feature, as he lowered the 3/8-mile oval’s late model track record to 14.831 seconds in time trials. Thereon, he led every lap of his heat race.

“I’m looking forward to going back to a place that I can race on,” Clanton said. “I’m excited to get back to New York. I’m hoping to put on a show for the fans and come out of there with a win.”

Following Weedsport Speedway in 2015, Clanton went on to win one of the preliminary nights of the Firecracker 100 weekend at Lernerville Speedway (Pa.). Having won the $6,000 purse last season, Clanton will now seek Saturday night’s $30,000 purse. Rick Eckert won the Firecracker 100 last season.

The three-day party includes raffles, games, live entertainment and a nightly fireworks show.  Fans can enter to win driver apparel or take home a door panel from their favorite late model. Fans will be able to win cool prizes, but also have the chance to beat their heroes in the annual cornhole competition and kickball tournament.

Fans may join the Outlaws in the annual “Kick-it” tournament, a charity kickball tournament organized by the Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation. The proceeds will go to children’s cancer research. For the list of events, you can visit http://woolms.com/firecracker-100.

Every night will be a shootout, with the best drivers in the nation lining up to throttle down. The roster of drivers not only includes the Outlaws’ full timers, but also others who will be giving them a run for their money; local heroes Alex Ferree and Russ King are on the list of challengers.

“I was here when they first started the series…one of the first 12 guys competing for the $1,000 purses for the first couple years,” said Eckert, who earned 30-times the payout from the 2015 Firecracker 100. “It’s hard to guarantee a win anywhere, but I would really like to repeat at Lernerville [Speedway]. I don’t know if we’re an Outlaw Outlaw – like a Jesse James type-thing – but we do go in there to their neighborhood and try to take their money. I plan to Saturday, June 25.”

Grandstands open for Weedsport Speedway at 5 p.m. ET, with racing scheduled to start at 7 p.m. At Lernerville Speedway, grandstands will open at 5 p.m. ET on Thursday and Friday, and 4 p.m. on Saturday. Hot laps are set to begin at 6:50 p.m. for all three nights. Visit weedsportspeedway.com  and lernerville.com for more details.

General Adult Admission tickets for the Finger Lakes 40 at Weedsport Speedway are $25 and may be purchased at the door. Reserved tickets for the Firecracker 100 weekend are $34 for Thursday and Friday, and $40 for Saturday’s main event. Three-day package deals are available.
