Inside Access: Defending World of Outlaws Champion Recaps Florida

Two-time defending World of Outlaws sprint car champion Jason Meyers will provide a weekly blog as he embarks upon his Allstar Appreciate Tour, including the first 11 World of Outlaws events of the 2012 season. Here is the first installment of his personal analysis, which recaps the season-opening event — the 41st annual UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla., on Feb. 17-19.

Dollansky Ends Schatz’s Rule at Volusia Speedway Park

Swindell is overall sprint car champion of UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 19, 2012 — Craig Dollansky emerged from his World of Outlaws sprint car and shared the sentiments felt by most of the teams, crew and spectators.

“This was a long day,” he said. “It was two nights of racing in one day.”

Dollansky capped a World of Outlaws doubleheader on Sunday at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla., by outlasting Donny Schatz, who started on the pole and had won every race he had been in all day. Schatz claimed the afternoon feature, which had been delayed since Friday because of rain.

It was also the final event for the sprint car portion of the 41st annual UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment, which was claimed by Sammy Swindell.

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 19, 2012 — After a week of frustration, Donny Schatz finally caught a break.

The four-time World of Outlaws champion capitalized en route to winning Friday’s rain-delayed event, which began early Sunday afternoon at Volusia Speedway Park. Windy conditions and sunny skies presented unique challenges to teams more accustomed to racing under the lights.

Schatz struggled during the first two nights of the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment as the veteran failed to advance to the feature both nights. That all changed on Sunday when he won a heat race, the dash and main event.

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 19, 2012 — Craig Dollansky withstood a close battle with Donny Schatz to claim the his first World of Outlaws feature victory of the season at the 41st annual UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment at Volusia Speedway Park.

Lasoski Claims World of Outlaws Sprint Car Season Opener

Former champ dominates for UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit win

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 18, 2012 — With a sweat-drenched brow and a childlike grin, Danny Lasoski exhaled a sigh of relief in Victory Lane. (Paul Arch photo)

For the first time in hours he was able to relax his shoulders and catch his breath after a whirlwind evening at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla., for the World of Outlaws season opener. Lasoski’s win was also his second of the week at the 41st annual UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment.

“We had our work cut out for us,” he said. “We only got to run one lap in qualifying. We broke a U-joint hot lapping and didn’t have time to change it. So I ran as quick a lap as I could with it shaking around.”

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 18, 2012 — Danny Lasoski captured the season opener for the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series on Saturday night during the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment at Volusia Speedway Park.

Lasoski, of Dover, Mo., was dominant all night after a scare during warm ups. He won his heat race, the dash and then started on the pole in the main event and quickly pulled away, weaving his way through traffic in the 30-lap race to take the checkered flag worth $10,000. Veteran restarts strong to claim UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit win

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 16, 2012 — Craig Dollansky had a bittersweet taste in returning to Volusia Speedway Park.

One year ago, the sprint car ace led 51 features laps only to leave without a top 10. In his return on Wednesday night to the half-mile dirt oval in Barberville, Fla., Dollansky finished eighth in what he deemed a learning night.

In front of a packed crowd on Thursday at the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment, Dollansky wowed the spectators and put the lessons to use by claiming the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions 30-lap feature.

Lasoski wins Night 1 of UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit

The winningest driver in Volusia Speedway Park adds another victory amid traffic

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 15, 2012 — For more than 20 straight laps on Wednesday, Volusia Speedway Park was littered with a traffic jam.

The intense jumble of lapped cars on the fast, half-mile dirt oval in Barberville, Fla., created dynamic racing at the 41st annual UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment. Danny Lasoski, the winningest driver in track history, worked his way through the clutter the best en route to claiming the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions victory.

“It’s a momentum booster for sure,” he said after picking up his 18th career sprint car win at Volusia Speedway Park.
