MARCHING FORWARD: CJB #51 Adds Another Top-5 at Merced
McMahan races forward with another solid night; maintains points lead
TELFORD, Pa. – April 2, 2014 – Few stretches on the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series bring more joy to Paul McMahan than the annual spring trip to California. With family, friends and races at tracks that he grew up racing at, the Elk Grove native is all smiles. The fact that his #51 Bairs Tree Service/Nyce, Crete & Landis Block & Concrete/All Star Performance sprinter is running up front is just the icing on the cake.
“2014 has been great so far,” said McMahan. “Our CJB Motorsports team has been firing on all cylinders and it’s showing.”
McMahan and his #51 team rolled into the Merced (Calif.) Speedway on Friday, March 29th for the tenth event of World of Outlaws event campaign.
“We continued our consistency at Merced,” explained McMahan. “We timed in fifth after going out near the very end of the 32 cars in time trials. We raced well in our heat but missed the dash. The track wasn’t very passable early on and everyone was near the bottom early on. We started ninth in the feature and made our way up to fourth. We stayed there until Tim (Kaeding) got the topside working and passed a bunch of us. We ended up fifth and that’s great for us. “
McMahan was looking forward to racing at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif. the following night but Mother Nature saturated the quarter-mile bullring and officials were forced to cancel the event.
Attention now turns to Calistoga (Calif.) Speedway. Situated in the heart of wine country, the famous half-mile holds special memories for McMahan.
“I remember going to Calistoga a lot as a kid,” said the California native. “There was always something special about it. The men wore white pants and the ladies wore their dresses. It had the feel of an upscale event and I think that had a lot to do with the effort and passion that Louie Vermeil put into it. I was very lucky to win some races there as I was coming up through the ranks. It’s a big track with beautiful scenery. I hope we do really well and keep our good start going.”
