Owens Completes Unprecedented Sweep Of Dirt Late Model Action During PEAK Motor Oil World of Outlaws World Finals by NAPA

Lanigan Falls Short Of Victory But Celebrates 2012 World of Outlaws Late Model Series Championship At The Dirt Track At Charlotte

By Kevin Kovac, WoO LMS P.R. Director

CONCORD, NC – Nov. 3, 2012 – Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., completed an unprecedented sweep of the PEAK Motor Oil World of Outlaws World Finals Presented by NAPA Auto Parts with a convincing victory in Saturday night’s 50-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Main at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.

The $10,000 triumph marked the fourth consecutive year that Owens captured the Saturday-night finale of the spectacular weekend – and, as a result, shared the post-race spotlight with the newly-crowned WoO LMS champion. Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., who finished third, was presented his second career World of Outlaws championship trophy in a confetti- and fireworks-filled ceremony moments after Owens stood on the winner’s stage.

Owens, 40, certainly didn’t have his amazing feat diminished by the dual Victory Lane celebrations. He earned plenty of recognition from the standing-room-only crowd of over 14,000 and the national television audience that watched the PEAK World Finals by NAPA on the SPEED cable network.

“Words can’t describe how much it means to win these two races this weekend,” said Owens, who has been victorious a record five times in 12 WoO LMS A-Mains contested during the PEAK World Finals by NAPA since the event’s birth in 2007. “It just means so much to me to pull this off. The electricity in the air with all these people here for this show is like no other race we run.”

Owens, who started third, passed Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., for the lead on lap five and never looked back. He easily handled two restarts late in the distance to cross the finish line 1.646 seconds in front of Watertown, N.Y.’s Tim McCreadie, who charged forward from the ninth starting spot to register a runner-up finish that moved him past Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., to fourth in the final WoO LMS points standings.

Lanigan swapped second place with McCreadie before finally ceding the position on lap 43 and settling for third. Madden faded to fourth at the finish after starting second and leading laps 1-4 and WoO LMS regular Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga., advanced from the 10th starting spot to complete the top five.

Owens, who outdueled Lanigan and 2011 WoO LMS champion Rick Eckert of York, Pa., to win Friday night’s 50-lap A-Main at the four-tenths-mile oval, was never seriously challenged in his history-making repeat effort.

“We had a good car last night but I felt like we could still do some things to make it better,” Owens said of his potent Mike Reece-owned Team Zero by Bloomquist mount. “We worked on it today and it was just awesome. We really found something for this place.”

McCreadie, 38, didn’t get a shot at racing Owens from second place on either of the race’s restarts. He reached third with his Warrior machine two circuits before the first caution flag flew, on lap 38 after Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, Ga., slammed the turn-three wall. McCreadie then briefly took second from Lanigan on the ensuing restart before Lanigan nosed back ahead to sit in the runner-up spot when Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., slowed to bring out a caution flag on lap 42.

The bridesmaid finish was McCreadie’s best on the WoO LMS since he was second on July 7 at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn. It came at an opportune time, pushing him past Frank, who finished 19th, for fourth in the points standings – a one position jump worth an extra $5,000 in points-fund cash ($35,000 versus $30,000 for fifth).

Lanigan will receive $100,000 for his WoO LMS championship, giving him over $425,000 in earnings on the 2012 tour. It’s a pretty good consolation for falling short of victory once again at The Dirt Track, where Lanigan is winless in 20 career starts.

“I think we may have been a little bit better (than Owens) before that caution (on lap 38),” said the fourth-starting Lanigan, who steered his Rocket car into second place with a lap-18 pass of Madden. “I think we were catching him a little bit, but I think the caution hurt us a little bit. We just didn’t fire after the restart.

“We were good, but we just missed it a little bit and Jimmy was good this weekend.”

Lanigan’s final championship margin was a record 228 points over Eckert, who finished 21st after relinquishing a top-five spot when his car lost power during the lap-42 caution period.

“It’s definitely been a heck of a year,” said Lanigan, who also won the WoO LMS title in 2008. “To do what we did – win (a record) 15 races, win Cedar Lake (the USA Nationals), everything else – it’s just been a phenomenal year. The first (championship) was nice, but to get your second one the way we did is definitely unbelievable.”

Don O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., finished sixth in the Childress Racing No. K71. Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., advanced from the 16th starting spot to place seventh; Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., was a quiet eighth; WoO LMS rookie Kent Robinson of Bloomington, Ind., was ninth; and Walker Arthur of Forest, Va., rounded out the top 10.

Heat winners were Owens, O’Neal, Madden, Eckert, Lanigan and McDowell. The B-Mains were captured by Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., Eric Wells of Hazard, Ky., and Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn.

The stars of the 2012 WoO LMS will be honored – and share in nearly $400,000 in points-fund cash – during the tour’s annual awards banquet on Sunday night (Nov. 4) at the Great Wolf Lodge in Concord, N.C

The 2013 WoO LMS campaign is scheduled to kick off on Feb. 8-9 with the ‘Winter Freeze’ doubleheader at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga.

10:05 p.m. – WoO LMS regulars Tim McCreadie and Tim Fuller finished fifth and 12th, respectively, in the 40-lap Super DIRTcar Series big-block Modified feature that took the checkered flag moments ago. The race was won by New Jersey big-block Modified superstar Brett Hearn.

The 30-lap WoO Sprint Car A-Main is now underway, with the WoO LMS headliner to follow.

9:20 p.m. – A field of 29 cars are set to take the green flag in the 50-lap A-Main.

The lineup was expanded with five provisionals. Shane Clanton and Chub Frank earned the WoO LMS points provisionals; Earl Pearson Jr. receives the provisional for the fastest pre-entered driver in time trials who failed to qualify; and Bub McCool and Vic Coffey are using WoO LMS ’emergency’ provisionals (they will relinquish last-place money).

The 40-lap Super DIRTcar Series big-block Modified feature — a race that has WoO LMS regulars Tim McCreadie and Tim Fuller starting sixth and 11th, respectively — is now on the racetrack. The 30-lap WoO Sprint Car A-Main will follow, and then the 50-lap WoO LMS season finale will close out the PEAK World Finals by NAPA.

A Charlotte winner again

9 p.m.Kentucky’s Eric Wells scored a WoO LMS preliminary-race win for the third time in as many starts this season at The Dirt Track, capturing the second 12-lap B-Main. He had previously won heat races last night and on Oct. 10.

Superman makes it

8:55 p.m. – Jonathan Davenport maintained control throughout the first 12-lap B-Main to emerge victorious and crack the A-Main starting lineup. He crossed the finish line 0.908 of a second in front of Dennis Erb Jr., who took the other transfer spot.

The race got off to a wild start, with the original green flag called back twice due to incidents. On the first attempt third-starter Pancho Lawler and WoO LMS regular Chub Frank got together off turn two, shuffling Lawler back and causing Ron Davies to spin on the backstretch in the chain-reaction jam-up. The restart saw Lawler get into the rearend of Frank in turn four and spin the Outlaw, who fortunately wasn’t hit hard by any passing cars. Frank got his spot back for the third restart by WoO LMS rule (multi-car tangles with no laps completed) and went on to finish third, forcing him to look to a provisional to start the A-Main.

B-Main 1 Finish: 1. Jonathan Davenport, 2. Dennis Erb Jr., 3. Chub Frank, 4. Earl Pearson Jr., 5. Duane Chamberlain, 6. John Mason, 7. Timothy Culp, 8. Rod Conley, 9. Pancho Lawler, 10. Rick looks good

6:50 p.m. – Rick Eckert appears ready to improve his A-Main finishing position by one from last night after absolutely blowing out the field in the fourth heat. He beat fellow WoO LMS regular Clint Smith by a commanding margin of 5.821 seconds.

Smith held on to finish second despite showing smoke during the final circuits, and Steve Francis placed third.

Shane Clanton rallied from the 12th and final starting spot (he didn’t record a timed lap on Thursday because he hit the wall) to finish sixth, one spot behind his Kennedy Motorsports teammate Tim Fuller

Heat 3 Finish: 1. Chris Madden, 2. Tim McCreadie, 3. Brandon Sheppard, 4. Eric Wells, 5. Tim Fuller, 6. Shane Clanton, 7. Eddie Carrier Jr., 8. Zack Dohm, 9. Chris Ferguson, 10. Dennis Franklin, 11. Bob Gordon, 12. Corey Weaver

The ‘Real Deal’ rolls

6:40 p.m. – Don O’Neal controlled the second heat, dominating the action from start-to-finish in the Childress Racing No. K71. He crossed the finish line 4.051 seconds ahead of Ohio’s R.J. Conley. Pennsylvania’s Gregg Satterlee placed third with Jonathan Davenport, who has won a PEAK World Finals by NAPA A-Main in each of the last two years, falling short of transferring by one spot. Conley’s older brother, Rod, finished fifth.

Heat 2 Finish: 1. Don O’Neal, 2. R.J. Conley, 3. Gregg Satterlee, 4. Jonathan Davenport, 5. Rod Conley, 6. Andrew Reaume, 7. John Mason, 8. Ron Davies, 9. Chad Hollenbeck, 10. Chris Farrell, 11. Joe Ramey, 12. Dale Hollidge

The ‘O-Show’ restarts

6:30 p.m. – Jimmy Owens picked up where he left last night, rolling to victory in the first heat. He easily outdistanced Josh Richards by 2.087 seconds in a race that ran caution-free. Virginia’s Walker Arthur grabbed the third and final transfer spot, rebounding nicely from problems last night (blown tire that forced him into the wall during heat action).

Heat 1 Finish: 1. Jimmy Owens, 2. Josh Richards, 3. Walker Arthur, 4. Dennis Erb Jr., 5. Pancho Lawler, 6. Chub Frank, 7. Earl Pearson Jr., 8. Duane Chamberlain, 9. Timothy Culp, 10. B.J. Robinson, 11. Brian Ledbetter, 12. Justin Coulter

Parade of states

5:35 p.m. – Tonight’s opening ceremonies featured the annual Parade of States, during which a fan from each state represented at the PEAK World Finals by NAPA carries their state’s flag on the road between the grandstand and frontstretch wall. This year a driver from each of the states was also included in the parade.

The two big-block Modified B-Mains began immediately after the parade and have already been completed. The five Sprint Car heats are now commencing, and then the six 8-lap WoO LMS heats will take to the track.

Chris Madden suffered mechanical woes during hot laps, forcing his crew to make a quick oil-pump change.

110312 Parade

Eckert fastest

5:30 p.m. – Rick Eckert turned the quickest lap in hot laps, touring The Dirt Track in 16.237 seconds. Jimmy Owens was second-fastest at 16.295 seconds, followed by Don O’Neal (16.486), Jason Feger (16.519) and Josh Richards (16.534). Darrell Lanigan was right there as well, clocking in sixth-fastest at 16.599 seconds.

Spoiler alert

4 p.m. – Tonight’s action is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and live updates will be provided throughout the program here and on Twitter. The SPEED television broadcast of tonight’s show starts at 8 p.m. EST, however, so here’s a warning to put yourself in black-out mode from the updates if you’d prefer not to know the results before watching the races on television — if, that is, the broadcast does not synch up live to the action on the track during the course of the program.

Afternoon work

3:50 p.m. – WoO LMS regulars Clint Smith and Tim McCreadie made motor changes today so they can run their primary cars in tonight’s action. Both drivers had their number one machines sidelined by mechanical trouble during hot laps last night — Smith lost a motor, while McCreadie broke a rearend. Smith put a backup powerplant in his primary mount while McCreadie put a new ProPower in his primary Sweeteners Plus No. 39.

Correction

3:45 p.m. – WoO LMS officials announced today that a slight change in the finishing order of last night’s 50-lap A-Main has been made following a check of scoring. Zack Dohm moved from a 23rd-place finish in the original order to 21st (a mistake was made because he lost the transponder on his car during the race), which in turn moved Clint Smith and Chub Frank down one positions, to 22nd and 23rd, respectively.

The change cost Smith and Frank two points in the WoO LMS standings.
