McCreadie Controls World of Outlaws Late Model Series Action At 311 Motor Speedway For First Win Of 2013

New Yorker Captures National Tour’s Visit To North Carolina Track For Second Straight Season

By Kevin Kovac, WoO LMS P.R. Director

PINE HALL, NC – April 20, 2013 – Something about 311 Motor Speedway agrees with Tim McCreadie.

The 39-year-old star from Watertown, N.Y., drove to a convincing victory in Saturday night’s 50-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series at the half-mile oval – the second consecutive year that his first win of the season on the national tour came at the Tar Heel State track.

McCreadie ran a virtually flawless race after surging off the outside pole to grab the lead from front-row partner Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., at the initial green flag. He paced the entire distance in his Sweeteners Plus Warrior car, turning back just a brief late-race challenge from Rick Eckert of York, Pa., en route to a $10,650 payday.

Eckert settled for his third runner-up finish of the 2013 season, steering his Team Zero by Bloomquist machine under the checkered flag 1.046 seconds behind McCreadie. The 2001 WoO LMS champion advanced from the ninth starting spot.

Richards slipped to third at the finish in his father Mark’s Rocket Chassis house car but maintained the WoO LMS points lead. Casey Roberts of Toccoa, Ga., moved up one spot to register a career-best World of Outlaws finish of fourth in his Capital Race Car and Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., placed fifth in the AES Racing Barry Wright car after starting third and running as high as second.

McCreadie ended a 31-race winless streak on the WoO LMS, dating back to June 22, 2012, at Quebec’s Autodrome Granby. That victory north of the border was his third in a nine-race span – a stretch of success that he hopes to extend to a greater degree this season.

“It’s fun to be up front,” said McCreadie, who recorded his 21st career win on the WoO LMS. “This is where I believe this Sweeteners team should be. We’re starting to show through. We’ve been way better this year than we were last year already and our goal is to keep everything rolling.”

McCreadie, who celebrated his 39th birthday on April 12, credited his prime starting spot for propelling him to a breakout triumph.

“That kid who drew the (No. 2) pill probably helped me out the most tonight,” said McCreadie, whose outside pole start was picked for him in the A-Main redraw by nine-year-old Nate Hooker of Danbury, N.C. “It just gets so dirty when you’re behind cars here it’s hard to maneuver, so being up front was definitely where I needed to be.”

McCreadie controlled the action following each of the race’s five restarts and maintained a steady edge ranging from a half to a full second throughout the distance. But he had to contend with Eckert, who reached second with a pass of Richards on a lap-26 restart, before securing the checkered flag.

“You’re never confident with the caliber of guys that are racing with us,” said McCreadie, the 2006 WoO LMS titlist. “I know one thing, and that’s (with) one mistake they’re gonna make you look silly, so we just tried to hold our own. The cushion was good and I just lived on it.

“I got some signals (from crewmen) that somebody was closing (using the bottom groove), but you just don’t know what to do. I ran 35-plus laps up there on the lip so it’s hard to just all of a sudden hang a left and run the bottom. But after I heard somebody under me I moved down and just tried to stay as straight as I could and hold on.”

The driver who made McCreadie alter his line was Eckert, who reached second place with a pass of Richards on a lap-26 restart and then slowly reeled in McCreadie. On lap 38, with lapped traffic looming ahead, Eckert pulled to the inside of McCreadie rounding turns three and four, but McCreadie fought off the 47-year-old’s bid and never felt serious pressure again.

“He was running that top and he left me a lot of room there getting into (turn) three,” said Eckert. “I changed my line, opened up my corner (entry) and got to where I was really making time on him. Then he slipped one time (on lap 38) – he pushed and got bent hard, and I got beside him (on the inside of turns three and four).

“Well, he saw me down there, and after that he moved down. After I showed my nose one time he made sure he was on the bottom coming off of four, and he even moved down into three. That got me down there in the dust to where I could barely keep up.”

Five caution flags slowed the event, including three involving WoO LMS regulars. Scott James of Bright, Ind., slowed on lap nine with a broken left-rear wheel bearing that ultimately caused him to retire his Warrior Chassis house car; rookie Eric Wells of Hazard, Ky., spun into the inside wall on the homestretch on lap 15 after Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., slowed and was hit from behind by Ricky Weeks of Rutherfordton, N.C.; and Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., relinquished seventh place on lap 22 when he slowed with a broken left-front upper A-frame (he returned five laps down).

Other cautions were caused by Chris Ferguson of Mt. Airy, N.C., who slowed on a lap-26 restart, and Dennis Franklin of Gaffney, S.C., who rolled to a stop in turn four on lap 40.

WoO LMS rookie Morgan Bagley enjoyed a solid night, advancing from the 14th starting spot to score a career-best tour finish of sixth. Kennedy Motorsports teammates Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., and Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, Ga., were seventh and eighth, respectively, after recovering from flat tires during qualifying (Fuller in time trials, Clanton on the last lap of his heat); WoO LMS rookie Dillon Wood of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., was a season-best ninth after starting 23rd with a provisional because mechanical trouble during heat action (ball spline broke off the transmission) forced him into his backup car; and Scott Autry of Autryville, N.C., rounded out the top 10.

Roberts topped the 29-car field in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials, earning his first-ever WoO LMS fast-time honor with a lap of 16.254 seconds.

Heat winners were Davenport, Lanigan and Richards, and Clanton captured the B-Main.

The WoO LMS heads to Tennessee next weekend for a massive tripleheader. The swing kicks off on Fri., April 26, at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville and then continues to Tazewell Speedway on Sat., April 27, and Duck River Raceway Park in Wheel on Sun., April 28.

LIVE UPDATES 4/20: World of Outlaws Late Model Series At 311 Motor Speedway

PINE HALL, NC – April 20, 2013 – The World of Outlaws Late Model Series returns to action tonight following a two-week layoff, visiting 311 Motor Speedway to contest a 50-lap, $10,000-to-win A-Main for the second consecutive year.

Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., captured last year’s inaugural WoO LMS event at the Tar Heel State oval, a sweeping half-mile that is owned and promoted by former racer Mike Fulp.

No. 1 for T-Mac

10:55 p.m. – There’s a big smile on Tim McCreadie’s face in the pit area as he celebrates a wire-to-wire triumph in the 50-lap A-Main — the second consecutive year that he’s scored his first WoO LMS victory of the season at 311 Motor Speedway.

McCreadie outgunned Josh Richards for the lead at the initial green flag and never looked back. He turned back a brief late-race challenge from Rick Eckert to pocket the $10,000 top prize.

Eckert finished 1.046 seconds behind McCreadie, completing a solid run forward from the ninth starting spot. Richards settled for third, followed by Casey Roberts and Jonathan Davenport, who ran as high as second.

A-Main Finish: 1. Tim McCreadie, 2. Rick Eckert, 3. Josh Richards, 4. Casey Roberts, 5. Jonathan Davenport, 6. Morgan Bagley, 7. Tim Fuller, 8. Shane Clanton, 9. Dillon Wood, 10. Scott Autry, 11. Main event nearing

9:50 p.m. – The third and final support-division feature of the evening just got the green flag, so the eight-minute horn to line up the WoO LMS A-Main has been blown. Cars will soon be rolling into the staging area.

Tonight’s A-Main will have a familiar WoO LMS face in the flagstand. Tyler Bachman, the tour’s pit steward, will leave his usual post inside turn four to fill in as the race’s flagman. With 311’s regular starter unable to work tonight due to injury, track owner/promoter Mike Fulp has twirled the flags throughout the night; Bachman, who has worked as a flagman at Pennsylvania’s Pittsburgh Motor Speedway and Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., among other tracks, will move to the flagstand for the WoO LMS A-Main. Everyone will be watching to see if Bachman shows some special style, like perhaps a of the flags when he gives the two-to-go signal.

Starting lineup complete

8:55 p.m. – Shane Clanton beat Eric Wells to the finish line to win the 12-lap B-Main. Dustin Mitchell and Ricky Weeks placed third and fourth, respectively, to round out the transfers in the last-chance event.

Dillon Wood and Billy Hicks will start in the 12th and final row of the A-Main using provisional spots.

Earlier, Josh Richards drew the pole position starting spot for the feature. Tim McCreadie will start from the outside pole as he bids to make 311 Motor Speedway the site of his first WoO LMS victory of the season for the second consecutive year.

A-Main Starting Lineup:

Row 1: Josh Richards/Tim McCreadie
Row 2: Jonathan Davenport/Clint Smith
Row 3: Casey Roberts/Darrell Lanigan
Row 4: Bub McCool/Tim Allen
Row 5: Rick Eckert/Justin Labonte
Row 6: Scott Autry/Chris Ferguson
Row 7: Scott James/Morgan Bagley
Row 8: Dennis Franklin/Chub Frank
Row 9: Tim Fuller/Jeff Smith
Row 10: Shane Clanton/Eric Wells
Row 11: Dustin Mitchell/Ricky Weeks
Row 12: Dillon Wood/Billy Hicks

Post-heat notes

8:35 p.m. – Jonathan Davenport shined in the first heat race, outgunning Casey Roberts at the start and rolling on to victory. Roberts finished second, but his lap of 16.132 seconds during the prelim was the fastest turned by any driver during the heats. Davenport’s best lap of 16.154 seconds was second-fastest of the qualifiers…Josh Richards won the third heat with the third-fastest lap of the night, at 16.476 seconds… Darrell Lanigan topped the third heat by 3.086 seconds over Clint Smith — the largest margin of victory in the heats…. Dillon Wood ran into trouble at the start of the first heat when his car’s oil-pump belt broke off, forcing him to the pits without completing a lap. He has swtiched to his backup car for the B-Main…. Shane Clanton appeared headed for a transfer spot in the first heat when a deflating right-rear tire caused him to slow on the final circuit, allowing Chub Frank to steal the sixth and final qualifying position….

Full heat results can be seen here….

First-timer

7:40 p.m. – Toccoa, Ga.’s Casey Roberts clicked off the quickest lap in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials, earning his first-ever WoO LMS fast-time honor with a circuit of 16.254 seconds. His run late in the qualifying session knocked defending WoO LMS champion Darrell Lanigan off the top of the speed chart.

Roberts, who entered all eight WoO LMS events during Georgia/Florida Speedweeks in February with a fifth-place finish in the season opener on Feb. 8 at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga., his best performance, has run well in World of Outlaws events around his home base in recent years. But the driver of the Capital Race Cars No. 101 has never won a WoO LMS heat race, so he’ll be shooting for another career milestone when he takes the green flag from the pole position in the first of three 10-lap preliminaries tonight.

Tim Fuller ran into trouble during time trials, cutting down a right-rear tire. He was left 23rd in the final rundown.

Dillon Wood, meanwhile, timed ninth-fastest, but he was put back to 16th in the qualifying order because he arrived late to the time-trial lineup. Drivers who are late can earn a qualifying time no better than half the field plus one car.

For complete results from time trials, click here.

Quick start

7:05 p.m. – WoO LMS points leader Josh Richards registered the fastest lap in tonight’s practice, blazing around the half-mile oval in 16.165 seconds. That’s about a half-second off the fast qualifying time for last year’s WoO LMS show at 311 Motor Speedway, a 15.653-second circuit turned by North Carolina’s Chris Ferguson.

Richards, of course, is making his first-ever start at 311. He did not compete in last year’s event because he had departed the tour to compete on the NASCAR Nationwide Series, but he said he remembers attending two races at 311 as a youngster when Steve Francis was driving his father’s Rocket Chassis house car.

Dillon Wood was second-fastest in hot laps at 16.194 seconds, followed by Tim McCreadie (16.351), Jonathan Davenport (16.385) and Rick Eckert (16.448).

Ohlins Shocks Time Trials are now on the track…

No time for rest

6:35 p.m. – WoO LMS rookie Eric Wells and his crew had an unexpectedly busy week leading into tonight’s action.

After Wells drove to a 17th-place finish in last Saturday night’s National Dirt Racing League 75-lapper at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Mo., his team took a close look at their unruly Bloomquist chassis machine. Wells had struggled to get the car up to speed during the previous week’s Illini 100 practice night at Farmer City (Ill.) Raceway — it was a half-second slower than his other mount, which he ran in the weekend’s event — and felt something was still off with the car when he was forced to use it at Pevely because his other machine was damaged after breaking a rearend in last Friday night’s NDRL show at Paducah (Ky.) International Raceway.

In the final analysis, Wells and Co. discovered that the car’s frame was bent (probably from a crash last year), so they stripped it down upon returning to their shop on Sunday night and then took it to Bloomquist’s headquarters in Mooresburg, Tenn., on Monday. They got the car back on Wednesday after it was clipped with new frame rails from the four-bar mounts forward and worked until 10 p.m. assembling it.

“We had to basically rebuild the other car too because it got damaged pretty good at Paducah, so we didn’t get much sleep this week,” said Wells, the current WoO LMS Rookie of the Year points leader. “We’re all pretty tired, so we’re actually pretty glad last night got rained out.”

Ready to go

6:05 p.m. – WoO LMS race director Bret Emrick is currently conducting the drivers’ meeting for the 29 entrants signed in for tonight’s action. Hot laps are scheduled to begin within the next half-hour.

Among the southern standouts on hand to challenge the WoO LMS stars are AES Racing teammates Jonathan Davenport and Dennis ‘Rambo’ Franklin, Jeff Smith, Casey Roberts, Ricky Weeks, Scott Autry, Chris Ferguson, Tim Allen and Billy Hicks.

He’s back

5:55 p.m. – WoO LMS rookie Dillon Wood has turned to a figure familiar to everyone on the World of Outlaws tour for mechanical assistance: Derek Gahring, a 26-year-old Georgian who has served as chief mechanic for Chub Frank and Clint Smith in recent seasons.

Tonight will mark Gahring’s first WoO LMS event working for Wood’s team, which is based at Gary Winger’s GW Performance shop outside Atlanta. The 22-year-old Wood had run the first nine races of this year’s schedule with his father, Todd, as his lone crewman.

Todd Wood, who returns to the family home in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., after racing trips while Dillon remains in Georgia, said having Gahring on board should greatly assist the team’s preparation. The elder Wood also quipped that bringing Gahring into the fold means that he’s “got another adopted youngin’ now.”

Gahring, though, reports that while he’s still young, he’s certainly growing up. He said on April 10 he proposed to his girlfriend, Ashleigh Dunn of Fayetteville, Ga., and they’re planning a wedding early in 2014. He said they’re tentatively looking at a ceremony at a beach location sometime in late March; he’s just hoping to figure out a week that will work with the racing calendar.

Assist from Mother Nature

5:05 p.m. – Clint Smith is another WoO LMS regular who was thankful for last night’s rain-out at Fayetteville. If the event had been run as scheduled, Cat Daddy’s alltime perfect attendance on the WoO LMS — he’s entered all 362 races run to date since 2004 — would have likely come to an end.

As Friday dawned, Smith did not have a single engine available to power his Rocket No. 44. After finding his self-owned team down to one working motor after a rough Georgia/Florida Speedweeks in February, he spent the next couple of months racing closer to home (except for the April 5-6 WoO LMS Illini 100 at Illinois’s Farmer City Raceway) without incident until problems struck the engine last week at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, Tenn. He finally got one motor back from RaceTek yesterday; he said he picked it up at 9 p.m., got back to shop in Senoia, Ga., at 11 p.m., bolted it into his car by 12:45 a.m. and hit the road for 311 Motor Speedway at 1 a.m.

“I cranked it up here in the pits and now I’ll dyno it in a couple hours,” Smith cracked with a smile, likening tonight’s hot laps to a dyno session.

Thankful to Mother Nature

4:25 p.m. – WoO LMS regular Tim Fuller was certainly happy that last night’s scheduled stop at Fayetteville was called off early in the morning by track officials due to approaching storms. He said he needed the evening off to get healthy.

“I don’t think I would’ve made it through the night if we ran last night,” said Fuller, who has been sick for several days but felt especially under the weather yesterday. He added that he’s feeling much better today after a day of rest in his hauler.

Gorgeous day

4:10 p.m. – After last night’s scheduled WoO LMS event at Fayetteville (N.C.) Motor Speedway was rained out, brilliant sunny skies are prevailing today here at 311 Motor Speedway. Temperatures have cooled into the 60s, but there’s absolutely no rain in the forecast — a welcome development for all travelers of the World of Outlaws tour, which has had five of its last six races postponed by wet and/or unseasonably cold weather.
