McCreadie Outruns Lanigan For World of Outlaws Late Model Series Victory At Quebec’s Autodrome Granby

Surging Star Gains Measure Of Redemption On National Tour’s Red-Hot Points Leader

By Kevin Kovac, WoO LMS P.R. Director

GRANBY, QUE – June 22, 2012 – Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., gained a measure of redemption on Friday night, outrunning World of Outlaws Late Model Series points leader Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., to win the national tour’s first-ever 50-lap A-Main at Autodrome Granby.

After absorbing a pair of late-race defeats to the the red-hot Lanigan over the last month, McCreadie seized control of Friday’s headliner on lap 23 when he passed Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga., and never looked back. He was chased for the final 26 laps by Lanigan but never let the World of Outlaws circuit’s current points leader get close enough to make a serious bid at victory.

McCreadie, 38, crossed the finish line 1.690 seconds ahead of Lanigan, who entered the event having won four of the last six WoO LMS events, including a triumph on June 17 at Eriez Speedway in Hammett, Pa., that saw him snatch the lead from McCreadie with just six laps remaining.

Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., finished a distant third in his Rocket car, but it was a season-best run for the struggling racer who started from the outside pole at a half-mile oval where he’s enjoyed success in DIRTcar Big-Block and 358-Modified action. DIRTcar 358-Modified regular Dale Planck of Homer, N.Y., recorded a career-high WoO LMS finish of fourth in the RezX Racing Rocket and Smith settled for fifth in his Rocket after leading the race’s first 22 laps from the pole position.

McCreadie’s $10,650 triumph was his third of 2012 on the WoO LMS. All of the checkered flags have come over the past nine races – a sizzling stretch that has seen the former DIRTcar Big-Block Modified star tally seven top-five finishes and no outings worse than seventh behind the wheel of his Sweeteners Plus Warrior mount.

“This car’s been clicking,” said McCreadie, who made his first-ever visit to Victory Lane at Granby, a longtime DIRTcar-sanctioned facility. “I’ve been comfortable. I haven’t been this comfortable in maybe five years in a Late Model.”

Lanigan, 42, did cause McCreadie to sit a bit uneasily in his car midway through the race. McCreadie, who started outside of Lanigan’s Rocket mount in the third row of the 24-car field, was running second on a lap-17 restart when Lanigan made a strong attempt to grab the spot using the outside of the track’s largely flat turns.

“On that restart he showed the outside twice and I thought, ‘Oh my God, here we go again,'” said McCreadie, who scored his 20th career win on the WoO LMS. “We got lucky to get in front of him. I just nosed him a little bit of (turn) four (to stay ahead), and then I realized it was better up there (in the outside groove).

“Darrell found (the top) first. That’s why he’s been the best car on the tour all year long – he’s not scared to move around. We’re just fortunate we were able to get up there in front of him and then use the top to get past Clint (for the lead). Clint’s car was really good, but the bottom just got slower getting into the middle and we ran the outside by him.”
{vimeo}44559884{/vimeo}
Lanigan was deposited on McCreadie’s rear bumper on lap 28 by the race’s fourth and final caution flag, for an accident between turns one and two involving Canadians Philip Potts of Frankford, Ont., and Charlie Sandercock of Belleville, Ont. But McCreadie opened a short lead on the restart and never let Lanigan draw closer than one second over the remaining caution-free circuits.

“I’m not happy with second, but we’re gonna take it tonight,” said Lanigan, who has 14 top-five finishes – including six victories and three runner-up placings – in 18 WoO LMS A-Mains this season. “I think I showed Timmy the outside too quick, and he got up there before I could get by him.”

The 44-year-old Fuller, meanwhile, was nearly a straightaway behind McCreadie and Lanigan when he passed his close friend Smith for third on lap 34 and never got any closer to the leaders, but a podium finish was a badly-needed boost to his self-owned program.

“Nobody likes to fade from the front row,” said Fuller, who slipped as far back as fifth before rallying. “But the way it’s gone this year, I’ll take it.

“I got some help from a friend of mine and he got me rolling better here of late, so hopefully this run will get us going into Cornwall (Motor Speedway for a WoO LMS event on Sun., June 24).”

Planck was the surprise of the night after advancing from the seventh starting spot to nab a milestone fourth-place finish with a last-lap pass of Smith. He didn’t decide to enter Granby’s WoO LMS event until Friday morning, when he hastily began preparing his team’s only dirt Late Model, a car that his DIRTcar 358-Modified teammate, Carey Terrance of Hogansburg, N.Y., drove in selected full-fender shows last year.

Dan Stone of Thompson, Pa., finished sixth in the Leo Milus-owned Super Deuce car after battling for a top-five spot throughout the distance. Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, Ga., was a quiet seventh; Ron Davies of Warren, Pa., moved forward from the 20th starting spot to place eighth; John Mason of Millersburg, Ohio, recovered from a lap-11 tangle in turn three with the lapped car driven by Caley Weese of Belleville, Ont. – an incident that knocked him from third place – to finish ninth; and defending WoO LMS champion Rick Eckert of York, Pa., rounded out the top 10.

Eckert drove his backup car in the A-Main after engine problems struck his primary machine during time trials.

WoO LMS rookie contenders Bub McCool of Vicksburg, Miss., and Jack Sullivan of Greenbrier, Ark., had rough nights in their first-ever racing visits to Canada. Both brought out caution flags – Sullivan on lap 12 for a left-front steering problem, and McCool on lap 17 for a flat left-front tire.

Twenty-four cars entered the event, which draw a large crowd of French-Canadian fans to the Dominic Lussier-promoted track.

Fuller was quickest in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials, turning a lap of 19.030 seconds to earn his second WoO LMS fast-time honor of 2012.

Heat winners were Fuller, Smith and McCreadie. No B-Main was run.

The WoO LMS continues its weekend Canadian swing on Sunday night (June 24) with a 50-lap, $10,000-to-win event at Cornwall (Ont.) Motor Speedway.

T-Mac thrills French-Canadian fans

10:55 p.m. – Tim McCreadie got the job done about an hour ago at Granby, taking the lead from Clint Smith on lap 23 and then outrunning the red-hot Darrell Lanigan late in the race to record his third WoO LMS victory of the season.

Lanigan reached second place on lap 24 and was put on McCreadie’s rear bumper by a caution flag on lap 28, but McCreadie was too strong over the remaining distance. He beat Lanigan to the finish line by 1.690 seconds.

A-Main Finish (50 laps): 1. Tim McCreadie, 2. Darrell Lanigan, 3. Tim Fuller, 4. Dale Planck, 5. Clint Smith, 6. Dan Stone, 7. Shane Clanton, 8. Ron Davies, 9. John Mason, 10. Rick Eckert, 11. Buddies share front row

8:55 p.m. – Pals Clint Smith and Tim Fuller will start alongside each other on the front row of the 50-lap A-Main, which is moments away from lining up in the pit area.

A-Main Starting Lineup:

Row 1: Clint Smith/Tim Fuller
Row 2: John Mason/Dan Stone

Fuller Still Perfect

8:05 p.m. – Tim Fuller added a victory in the first heat to his fast-time award, rolling to a 1.032-second triumph over Dan Stone. Other heat winners were Clint Smith and Tim McCreadie, and the runners-up in the second and third prelims were John Mason and Darrell Lanigan, respectively.

Rick Eckert ran into trouble during time trials, developing motor problems that forced him to switch to his backup car for his heat race. He finished fifth in the second heat.

Fast Fuller

7:40 p.m. – Putting to use some of his knowledge of Autodrome Granby from his DIRTcar Big-Block Modified days, Tim Fuller blazed to the fastest lap in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials, clocking the half-mile in 19.030 seconds. He earned his second WoO LMS fast-time of 2012 by a hair over his good buddy Clint Smith.

Fuller wore a smile in the pit area after qualifying and said he car feels as good as it has all year, but he knows he must continue his speed through the heat action that is starting now. There will be three 10-lap heats, with the top-two finishers in each redrawing for A-Main starting spots. No B-Main will be run.

Dirt Late Model first-timer Dan Davies out-timed his father Ron by one spot, but Dan was disqualified to last in the rundown for weighing in two pounds light.

The full time trials results can be found here.

Here we go again?

6:55 p.m. – Darrell Lanigan has won four of the last six WoO LMS events — not to mention the tour’s last race in Canada, in August 2010 at Autodrome Drummond — and he’s obviously looking for more tonight. He was fastest in hot laps with a lap of 18.636 seconds, leading Shane Clanton, Tim McCreadie, Dan Stone and Pat Doar.

Ohlins Shocks Time Trials are already underway. Granby has a strict 11 p.m. curfew, so tonight’s program, which also includes DIRTcar 358-Modifieds, Sportsman and 4-Cylinders, will be spun off in rapid-fire fashion.

Visiting a friend

No one was more surprised to see veteran John Mason of Millersburg, Ohio, pull into the Granby pit area today than his longtime pal Bert Robidoux, the proprietor of the famed Bert Transmission business located just outside Montreal. Mason has annually entered the WoO LMS events in Canada to visit with Robidoux, but with Mason having run only one race this year because he’s been busy with business commitments, Robidoux didn’t expect his buddy to show up at Granby.

“He surprised me,” said Robidoux as he stood talking with Mason. “I had no idea he was coming.”

Hot laps coming

6:25 p.m. – A total of 24 cars are signed in for competition tonight, including John Lobb crewman Ross Robinson of Georgetown, Del., who brought his own No. 7 along to make his second WoO LMS start of 2012, and DIRTcar 358-Modified driver Dale Planck of Homer, N.Y., who made a last-minute decision to enter tonight’s program.

Practice will begin in a few minutes…

Father & son

6:15 p.m. – Ron Davies, who traveled the WoO LMS in 2011, is back on the road with the Outlaws this weekend and he’s brought along a teammate: his 27-year-old son Dan, who will make his first-ever competitive dirt Late Model start tonight in his dad’s second car.
062212_Davies
Dan has been driving UMP-type open-wheel Modifieds for the past four years at western Pennsylvania-area tracks, but he hasn’t gotten behind the wheel of a dirt Late Model since he hot-lapped one of his father’s machines 10 years ago at McKean County Raceway in East Smethport, Pa. He’s ready for the challenge, though his father joked that perhaps Granby isn’t the best place to get him up to speed.

“Maybe we should’ve gone to a smaller track for his first time in a Late Model,” smiled Ron Davies. “But I guess with these straightaways being so long, he’ll have a lot of time to think before he gets to the other end.”

The elder Davies was asked what will happen if his son is able to defeat him tonight or at Cornwall (Ont.) Motor Speedway on Sunday evening.

“I think it’d be a good thing,” Davies said with a laugh. “I’ll know it’s time for me to get out. I can retire and help him.”

Grand Granby

6:05 p.m. – There’s a unique atmosphere here at Autodrome Granby, a top-notch facility that features a three-story VIP tower, seating for over 6,000 fans, a giant turn-three scoreboard and even a pedestrian tunnel under the homestretch to allow easy access between the grandstand and pit area.
062212_Poutine
The speedway concession stand also offers one of the top delicacies in short-track racing: poutine (photo at left, held by a Granby worker). A combination of french fries, gravy and chesse curds in a styrofoam cup, poutine is a culinary staple in Quebec and easily the most popular item on all racetrack menus in the province.

The WoO LMS’s resident taste-tester, pit steward Tyler Bachman, is in the midst of eating his first poutine in his initial trip to Quebec. Bachman’s review? “It’s phenomenal,” said Bachman, who could barely get the words out between bites of wholesome poutine goodness as Darrell Lanigan crewman Jason Jameson and WoO LMS director Tim Christman looked on.

Missing man

5:30 p.m. – Absent from WoO LMS competition tonight for the first time in 2012 will be Vic Coffey of Caledonia, N.Y., who experienced issues at the border and was not able to enter Canada. He enters the weekend ranked sixth in the points standings, putting him in line for a career-best finish on the tour.

A total of 12 WoO LMS travelers are already unloaded: Darrell Lanigan, Rick Eckert, Chub Frank, Tim McCreadie, Shane Clanton, Bub McCool, Clint Smith, Pat Doar, Kent Robinson, Tim Fuller, Jack Sullivan and John Lobb. Other entrants on hand include Dan Stone (in the Leo Milus-owned Super Deuce machine); Ron Davies and his son Dan Davies (making his dirt Late Model debut); veteran John Mason of Millersburg, Ohio; Clint Smith crewman Duane Treadwell of Lagrange, Ga., a Peach State racer who will get a shot to drive Smith’s backup car; and a contingent of Canadians from Brighton (Ont.) Speedway that includes Greg Belyea, Charlie Sandercock, Philip Potts, Caley Weese and Kyle Sopaz.

Bienvenue

5:05 p.m. – Cars and fans are filing into Autodrome Granby, a longtime DIRTcar-sanctioned track that is hosting the World of Outlaws Late Model Series for the first time. Temperatures are in the 80s and partly cloudly skies are prevailing.

Granby promoter Dominic Lussier is expecting a big crowd to pack the facility’s steep homestretch grandstand and smaller bleachers in turns one and four as the series races in front of the French-Canadian fans for the first time since August 2010 at Autodrome Drummond.
