iRacing World of Outlaws ButtKicker Late Model Series Race Preview: I-55

iRacing Late Models

The second half of the 2023 iRacing World of Outlaws ButtKicker Late Model Series takes the fight for a $25,000 championship purse to Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55. As always, Monday’s action can be seen live starting at 9 p.m. (ET) on DIRTVision and at twitch.tv/iracing.

Last Race: For the first time in his career, Logan Rumsey is an iRacing World of Outlaws Late Model winner after out dueling defending series champion and points leader Evan Seay in the closing stages at Knoxville Raceway. Rumsey qualified first, won his Heat, and led early in the Feature, but saved his car for late after Seay took the lead and pulled away in the middle portion of the race. After a late caution bunched the field back up, Rumsey muscled his way back into the lead, while Seay fell to third behind Chase Hardy at the finish.

Last Year: 2019 series champion Blake Matjoulis took the checkered flag in last year’s visit to I-55, his second checkered flag of the 2022 season. To do it, he had to hold off his teammate Seay in the final laps, despite qualifying first and winning his heat. In the end, Matjoulis led 46 of the 50 laps in the feature—and after missing last week’s main event in Knoxville, he’ll be hoping for a similar performance at I-55 this time out.

Track Facts: The third-mile Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 presents a unique challenge for dirt racers, not only from its length but also for its substantial banking. With 10 degree-banked straightaways and 19 degrees in the corners, it’s a fast, challenging track that has long attracted the sport’s biggest names—and the fact that racing legend Ken Schrader is the owner certainly helps, too. I-55 hosts the longest feature of the year for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Sprint Cars with the Ironman 55 each August.

Next Race: Following I-55, the iRacing World of Outlaws ButtKicker Late Model Series heads to Williams Grove Speedway on Monday, August 21. Last year, Williams Grove saw Seay take the checkered flag, becoming the first repeat winner of the year as he led all 50 laps of the feature. It was also his fourth straight top-two finish to kick off his championship season.
