Another Texas two-step is on tap for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series when the Greatest Show on Dirt returns to Cotton Bowl Speedway, March 21-22.
Located about an hour outside of Austin, the 3/8-mile Texas dirt track will welcome the World of Outlaws for its ninth and 10th events at the high-banked facility.
Giovanni Scelzi won the Series’ last event at the track – his first there – and while it’s a reason he’s looking forward to the return, below he talks about why you should be excited too.
Why should someone go to Cotton Bowl Speedway?
Scelzi: It’s a super unique racetrack. Not being too far east of Austin, a lot of stuff near there within hotel distance. Just a cool place to go to I feel like. Always creates good racing. You get all of your Outlaw guys and a few good locals that come race because not much else is going on. Super unique racetrack and really cool facility.
What was it like to win at Cotton Bowl last year?
Scelzi: It was awesome. I think we ran third the first night and won the second night and ended up taking the points lead. Cool to have the points lead for a week or two. Cool to say at least you did. Just seemed like we were super solid that whole weekend.
Do you remember your first experience at Cotton Bowl?
Scelzi: I believe I went there in 2021. It seems that track creates a good surface. You don’t have to worry about the track getting super slick. It always stays really racey. And not normally having a support class always helps the show run quick.
Are there any places around the track you like going to?
Scelzi: Downtown Austin is great. We got to spend a couple days walking around there last year when we were there between Cotton Bowl and Kennedale. Super cool area. Around Dallas and Austin are really cool areas to go and hangout.
Did you find a good food spot?
Scelzi: There was a place in downtown Austin called Sammie’s, a little Italian place. It was killer. We’re definitely going back this year when we go back.
What are the Texas fans like?
Scelzi: Man, they love Sprint Car racing. The Outlaws… really, I feel like Devil’s Bowl was the only track that had Sprint Car races in that area. With Devil’s Bowl closing, it’s opened the door for a lot of tracks to race, between Cotton Bowl and Kennedale (Speedway Park). Obviously, Arrowhead is in Oklahoma, but still similar areas down there in Texas. Those fans don’t get to see Winged 410 Sprint Car racing very often, so they love it.
What’s the racing in Texas like?
Scelzi: I think there’s unique racetracks. Their surfaces are almost kind of like an Arizona surface where they’re really sandy. Kind of being in a desert kind of climate, I guess you could say, where it is really dry and the tracks don’t have much grip, that’s for sure. When they take a turn when it gets slick, they go in a hurry.
Watch Scelzi compete for another victory at Cotton Bowl Speedway during the Federated Auto Parts Texas Two-Step with The Greatest Show on Dirt, Friday-Saturday, March 21-22.
