McCreadie Outduels Lanigan Down The Stretch For Victory In Fulton Bank 50 At Delaware International Speedway

New Yorker Claims Second World of Outlaws Late Model Series Triumph Of 2013

DELMAR, DE – May 30, 2013 – Tim McCreadie wasn’t going to let another World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Main slip through his fingers.

Erasing memories of several recent disappointments on the national tour, McCreadie outdueled Darrell Lanigan down the stretch to capture Thursday night’s Fulton Bank 50 at Delaware International Speedway.

McCreadie, 39, of Watertown, N.Y., started on the outside pole and led all but one lap en route to his second WoO LMS triumph of 2013, but he found himself in a dogfight with Union, Ky.’s Lanigan over the final 10 circuits. After Lanigan slipped ahead to lead lap 43, McCreadie regained command the following circuit and made all the right moves the rest of the way to defeat the defending World of Outlaws champion by 0.875 of a second.

It was a satisfying $10,650 win for McCreadie, who snapped a run of tough luck with his Sweeteners Plus Warrior car.

“It’s been a bunch of races leading with no results for us lately, so this is nice,” said McCreadie, who over the past two weeks suffered heartbreaking losses on May 11 at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark. (tangled with lapped car while leading with five laps to go) and May 25 at Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne, W.Va. (flat tire while in front). “The Warrior car’s been fast but we haven’t had anything to show for it. It was just our day this time.”

Rick Eckert of York, Pa., finished a hard-earned third. He charged forward from the 14th starting spot to reach the show position on lap 36 and shrank a near-straightaway deficit to Lanigan to a few car lengths within 10 laps, but he overheated his tires running down the leaders and thus was unable to mount a challenge.

Ricky Elliott of Seaford, Del., who entered the event undefeated in five dirt Late Model starts this season at DIS, finished fourth after starting fifth and climbing as high as third. It marked the third time in nine WoO LMS events at DIS that he placed fourth.

Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Ga., finished fifth. He started from the pole position but was outgunned for the lead by McCreadie at the initial green and gradually fell through the top five, finally settling into fifth place when Eckert sailed by him on lap 36.

McCreadie held firm control of the top spot for most of the distance, maintaining a half- to full-second edge until Lanigan pulled close late in the race. Lanigan nosed his Rocket machine underneath McCreadie for the first time on lap 40 and eventually surged in front as lap 43 was scored, but the winningest WoO LMS driver in 2013 couldn’t make the pass stick.

“I was trying to run that middle-to-the-top (line) and he pretty much drove right on by me,” McCreadie said of Lanigan. “I just thought, Oh my God, I just gave this one away. But then he just slipped up in (turns) one and two.

“But we were lucky that Darrell just slipped up a little bit off of (turn) two (the following lap) and I could get back by him. Then we just held on.

“Darrell’s been the guy the last three years,” he added, “and anytime you can get lucky enough to beat him, we’ll take it for Sweeteners Plus and our whole program.”

With a fresh ProPower engine under his car’s hood, McCreadie registered his 22nd career victory on the WoO LMS and first-ever at the half-mile Delaware oval. His previous win this year came on April 20 at 311 Motor Speedway in Pine Hall, N.C.


Lanigan, who will celebrate his 43rd birthday on June 3, fell short in his bid for a circuit-leading fifth win of 2013. He was coming off a $15,000-plus triumph in Sunday night’s Jackpot 100 by NAPA Auto Parts finale at Tyler County.

“(McCreadie) changed his groove a little bit and went down to the bottom and kind of blocked our groove,” said Lanigan, who ran his streak of top-three finishes to six in a row. “But that’s what you’re supposed to do. Timmy had a good car tonight. We come home second and we’re happy with that.”

Eckert, 47, might have been able to turn the race into a three-car battle for the winner’s check if he had caught the right break in the closing laps.

“I would’ve really liked to have a caution when I got to third there,” said Eckert. “They (McCreadie and Lanigan) were a straightaway ahead, and until I run ’em down I had my tires overheated from running so hard. If I could’ve cooled ’em down during a caution I think we would’ve had a shot at it.

“But that’s what you get when you qualify terrible. I dug us a hole and didn’t dig us all the way out.”

WoO LMS points leader Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., finished a quiet sixth, improving one position from where he started. Austin Hubbard of Seaford, Del., who switched to his backup car after his primary machine was sidelined by engine trouble during hot laps, was next in seventh place; Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., placed eighth; Dan Stone of Thompson, Pa., hustled forward from the 20th starting spot to finish ninth; and DIS regular Andrew Mullins of Bethel, Del., smoothly advanced from the 19th starting spot to complete the top 10 in his first career WoO LMS appearance.

Just two caution flags slowed the event. Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga., was left spun in turn four on the 15th lap after an apparent scrape with Mark Pettyjohn of Milton, Del., and Vic Coffey of Caledonia, N.Y., spun off turn four on lap 28 while running eighth.

A field of 31 cars was signed in for the program, which was run in summer-like conditions.

David Williams of Mechanicsville, Md., was quickest in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials with a lap of 19.264 seconds. It was the first-ever WoO LMS fast-time honor for the four-time champion at Potomac Speedway in Budds Creek, Md.

Heat winners were Lanigan, Kenny Pettyjohn of Millsboro, Del., and Clanton. Pettyjohn’s heat victory was his first-ever in WoO LMS competition.

Mullins captured the 12-lap B-Main.

The WoO LMS has a day off before making its first visit of 2013 to the Empire State on Saturday night (June 1) for a 50-lap A-Main at Stateline Speedway in Busti, N.Y.

DELMAR, DE – May 30, 2013 – The World of Outlaws Late Model Series makes its annual visit to the Northeast’s Atlantic Coast tonight to contest the Fulton Bank 50 at Delaware International Speedway.

A half-mile oval situated right along U.S. Route 13 in southern Delaware, DIS has become a stalwart of the WoO LMS. Tonight’s $10,000-to-win event marks the ninth time in the last 10 years that the track has hosted the national tour.

T-Mac holds on

10:45 p.m. – Tim McCreadie is back at his trailer, meeting with fans and enjoying himself after outdueling Darrell Lanigan to capture the Fulton Bank 50.

McCreadie led all but one lap of the 50-lapper, but it was by no means an cakewalk to Victory Lane for the New Yorker. After Lanigan slipped ahead to lead lap 43, T-Mac turned up the wick to regain command the following circuit and beat Lanigan to the checkered flag by 0.875 of a second.

Clanton leads ’em to green

9 p.m. – Shane Clanton drew the pole position for the A-Main. He’ll bid for his fourth victory of 2013 with his team owner, John Kennedy, on hand after flying in today from his home in Phoenix.

DIS owner Charlie Cathell is currently on the track doing his customary pre-feature reworking of the surface. Tonight’s support division, the Little Lincolns, will be rolling out for a 15-lap feature shortly and then it will be time for the WoO LMS Fulton Bank 50.

Qualifying Notes

8:50 p.m. – Darrell Lanigan, Kenny Pettyjohn and Shane Clanton were victorious in the three 10-lap heat races…. Lanigan was the most dominant prelim victor, turning the fastest lap of the heats (19.361 seconds) en route to a 4.039-second margin of victory over Ricky Elliott…. Elliott, who has won all five dirt Late Model features at DIS this season, remarked that his car “felt as good as it does here on a Saturday night.” He paused and then added, “But that’s not good enough tonight. Lanigan blew us away, so we’re gonna have to find something.”… Josh Richards finished third in the first heat – a rare night that the WoO LMS points leader missed the A-Main redraw…. Fast-timer David Williams slipped from the pole position start in Heat 1 to a fourth-place finish…. Delaware veteran Kenny Pettyjohn’s victory in the second heat marked his first-ever heat triumph in WoO LMS competition…. Second-heat polesitter Morgan Bagley was set back one row after officials deemed that he jumped the start. He settled for a fourth-place finish…. The newly-wrapped car that Austin Hubbard brought out for his hometrack’s biggest show was sidelined by terminal engine problems that surfaced before he even hit the track for hot laps. He pulled out his backup machine and time respectably (ninth-fastest) without practice and finished third in the final heat…. Hubbard’s good buddy, DIS regular Andrew Mullins, won the B-Main in his first-ever WoO LMS start…. Gregg Satterlee experienced mechanical trouble during hot laps that prevented him from time-trialing and running in his heat. He failed to qualify in the B-Main, but he’ll make the A-Main thanks to a WoO LMS points provisional….

Surprise at the top

7:55 p.m. – Maryland veteran David Williams surprised the WoO LMS racers, earning his first career fast-time honor on the tour with a lap of 19.264 seconds in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials.

A four-time track champion at Potomac Speedway in Budds Creek, Md., Williams was the first driver on the track for qualifying and ripped off a circuit that held up for the entire session.

WoO LMS rookie Morgan Bagley, who admits that he’s still learning how to qualify because he hasn’t time-trialed much during his short dirt Late Model career, was second-fastest at 19.285 seconds for his career-best qualifying effort on the WoO LMS.

7 p.m. – At the end of tonight drivers’ meeting WoO LMS director Tim Christman took the microphone to recognize tour official Sandy Holt, who will leave her position as chief series scorer and administrator following this Saturday night’s event at Stateline Speedway in Busti, N.Y. Holt has worked for the series since 2005, when she began running up-and-down the road with her boyfriend, WoO LMS announcer Rick Eshelman.

Holt was presented an oversized thank-you card signed by all WoO LMS drivers, crew members and officials. Longtime series regular Chub Frank presented the card to Holt, and all 11 World of Outlaws regulars took a moment to pose with her for a photo (below).

While Holt will retire to the home she shares with Eshelman in Phenix City, Ala., Eshelman will continue following the series schedule.

Race time nearing

6:45 p.m. – With the drivers’ meeting concluding moments ago, the 30 cars signed in for tonight’s action will soon be heading on the track for hot laps.

Eleven WoO LMS regulars are on hand (Scott James is absent after reportedly deciding to drop off the tour). Drivers expected to provide the travelers the stiffest competition include Ricky Elliott, who has won all five weekly features this season at DIS; Jamiue Lathroum, the 2009 WoO LMS winner at DIS; two-time WoO LMS A-Main winner Dan Stone; 2010 WoO LMS Rookie of the Year Austin Hubbard, who is debuting a new bright-green-accented wrap that includes an image of the Incredible Hulk on the hood; Vic Coffey, who is rejoining the WoO LMS for the first time since February; Gregg Satterlee; Kenny Pettyjohn; Mark Byram; and Donnie Lingo Jr.

Profitable off-night

6:10 p.m. – Rick Eckert picked up some extra cash last night thanks to a Victory Lane visit — not behind the wheel of a dirt Late Model, however.

053013 EckertSpeedSTR2This year Eckert has a SpeedSTR car — a small, Midget-with-a-body-type machine designed to facilitate entrance into racing at a reasonable cost (photo below) — that he plans to race in Wednesday-night events at Action Track USA at the Kutztown Fairgrounds, a one-fifth-mile dirt oval located across the street from Kutztown (Pa.) University. He was attracted to the mid-week small-car racing by Richie ‘Toby’ Tobias Jr., a veteran Northeast Big-Block Modified and USAC Silver Crown driver and builder of the SpeedSTR cars who took over the Kutztown track’s promotion this year and put up a $2,000 first-place prize for the SpeedSTR division in hopes of luring big-name short-trackers like Eckert to participate.

Eckert emerged victorious in last night’s first feature, which was held-over by rain from the previous week. He appeared primed to sweep the night when he burst into the lead at the start of the regularly-scheduled feature, but he clipped an inside marker tire and spun midway through the event and settled for an 11th-place finish.

“It’s a blast running those things,” said Eckert, who competed against such well-known short-track drivers as Northeast Big-Block Modified stars Billy Pauch, Kenny Brightbill (a recent Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame inductee for his years in the division during the early ’80s), Jeff Strunk, Craig Von Dohren, Dale Planck, Mike Mahaney and Billy Pauch Jr. “I’ll be there (at Kutztown) whenever I don’t have an Outlaw show that conflicts. Next Thursday there’s a (SpeedSTR) race at Path Valley (Speedway in Spring Run, Pa.) that I’m gonna go run too.”

Eckert came very close to enjoying a $4,000 night, but earning $2,000 for his win (plus $250 for 11th place) wasn’t too shabby for the relatively small investment in money and time he’s made to run the car.

“With those things a whole car costs less than an engine rebuild for these things,” he said, motioning to his dirt Late Model in the Delaware pit area. “And to get it ready, I basically cleaned out the injectors, lubed it up and went racing.”

Visit with the Robinsons

5:40 p.m. – Tonight’s program is a homecoming for Tim Fuller’s Kennedy Motorsports chief mechanic Ross Robinson, a 22-year-old native of nearby Georgetown, Del., who was a dirt Late Model regular at Delaware International before heading out on the road as a crewman last year.

With three days off since the last WoO LMS event on Sunday at West Virginia’s Tyler County Speedway, Robinson had a chance to sleep in his own bed. His parents, C.R. and Kim, also hosted Fuller, Fuller’s Kennedy Motorsports teammate Shane Clanton and Clint Smith at their home and shop during the break.

And make no mistake — the Robinsons showed their guests some serious First State hospitality. Kim Robinson fed the three teams virtually non-stop, serving up lasagna, burgers, hot dogs, breakfast casseroles and an assortment of other snacks.

“They treated us so well,” said Fuller. “They just kept bringing food out for us. I think we all gained 20 pounds while we were there.”

After completing work on their race cars, Fuller, Clanton and Smith and their crewmen headed over last night to Ocean City, Md., for some R&R at the beach.

Rolling In

4:20 p.m. – Just six days after WoO LMS teams found ice on the windshields of their haulers after running an unseasonably frigid Memorial Day weekend event at NAPA Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio, the weather conditions have taken a complete 180-degree turn. It’s turned summer-like, with temperatures soaring into the 90s and sunny skies prevailing here at Delaware International Speedway, which sits less than a half-hour drive from the Atlantic Ocean beaches in Delaware and Maryland.

Gates to the speedway just opened about 20 minutes ago, so haulers are beginning to file into the pit area.
