Schatz, World of Outlaws Claim Night 1 of the Mini Gold Cup

The four-time Outlaws champion leads all 35 laps to earn his second victory of year

CHICO, Calif. — March 23, 2012 — With bragging rights on the line between the World of Outlaws and the California contingent, Friday’s main event couldn’t have set up any better.

Donny Schatz, a four-time World of Outlaws champion and the current points leader, and two-time King of California Jonathan Allard started on the front row of the 35-lap feature during Night 1 of the Mini Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway.

Schatz capitalized on a good start and led wire to wire en route to picking up his second victory of the season. It also gave the Outlaws a 2-to-1 edge in wins versus Californians this season in the state of California.

“Tonight we started up front and maintained,” Schatz said after extending his points lead to 20. “We’re not 100 percent where we are comfortable with the car and all the stuff yet. To have two wins in this position at this time of the year and to not be 100 percent confident in what we’ve got going on yet is pretty good.”

Schatz took advantage of the qualifying invert, which started him on the pole of his heat race after timing in 15th quickest. He led all 10 laps to lock himself into the dash. Kraig Kinser, who set quick time with a lap of 12.458 seconds, randomly pulled the No. 6 to invert the first three rows of the dash. That moved Schatz to the pole of the dash and he again led the entirety of the eight-lap race to earn the pole for the feature.

“That dash draw always helps,” he said. “Starting up there on the inside was great.”

Meanwhile, Allard won his heat race from the outside front row to lock himself into the dash, where he started outside Schatz. The duo stayed within a couple car lengths of each other for most of the race with Schatz edging Allard for the top spot and the inside lane – which was the preferred spot – for the start of the main event.

“I just fell in behind Donny and tried to learn something,” Allard said. “I’ve been known for not managing my tires as well as we could have, but the Goodyears lasted, we came home with second and we’re very proud of that.”

The race featured only two cautions – on lap 24 when 10th-running Kyle Larson spun out in turn two and on the final lap when Robbie Whitchurch stopped exiting turn four – as Schatz maintained a comfortable pace on the quarter-mile track that favored the bottom.

“You just had to be cautious not to spin your tires and slip up out of that bottom groove,” Schatz said. “There wasn’t a lot of moving around. There were guys trying things, but just couldn’t make anything work. You had to be on the bottom of the race track, right on the gutter. As long as I stayed there and tried to keep from making a mistake, I was going to be ok.”

And he never pulled within a car length of lapped traffic.

“I was hoping maybe Donny would get into traffic, but he was too smart to do that,” Allard said after his runner-up finish.

Starting in the second row, veteran Outlaws driver Joey Saldana and defending King of California Tim Kaeding duked it out for the final podium position. Saldana edged Kaeding, who had claimed two of the previous three World of Outlaws features.

That moved Saldana to second in the points, while Kaeding’s result was his fourth consecutive top-six finish.

Steve Kinser rounded out the top five. Kraig Kinser was sixth, Lucas Wolfe seventh, Bill Rose placed a season-high eighth and Jason Sides ended ninth. Last Chance Showdown winner Jac Haudenschild picked up his first top 10 of the season.

In addition to Schatz and Allard, Cody Darrah and Saldana earned heat race wins. Trey Starks claimed the KSE Hard Charger Award for the second straight race.

Heat #2: 1, Paul McMahan. 2, Chad Kemenah. 3, Kyle Larson. 4, Tim Kaeding. 5, Robbie Whitchurch. 6, Rico Abreu. 7, John Michael Bunch. 8, Cody Darrah. 9, Cody Lamar.

Heat #3: 1, Donny Schatz. 2, Terry McCarl. 3, Craig Dollansky. 4, Jac Haudenschild. 5, Willie Croft. 6, Lucas Wolfe. 7, Jason Statler. 8, Kerry Madsen. 9, Pat Harvey Jr.

Heat #4: 1, Bill Rose. 2, Kyle Hirst. 3, Joey Saldana. 4, Steve Kinser. 5, Austen Wheatley. 6, Bobby McMahan. 7, Shane Golobic. 8, Sean McMahan. 9, Brenton Nugent.

Brenton Nugent just showed up so he’ll start on the end of the fourth heat.

(6:46 p.m.) Kraig Kinser was the fast qualifier with a lap of 12.458 seconds. It’s his first quick time of the season and the fifth consecutive race of qualifying in the top five.

Californian Tim Kaeding was second quick at 12.624 seconds and teammate Jac Haudenschild was third at 12.665. Steve Kinser was fourth at 12.683 and Sammy Swindell rounded out the top five at 12.700.

(6:21 p.m.) Willie Croft was the quickest in the fourth-and-final session at 13.197 seconds. Qualifying is up next.

(6:17 p.m.) Craig Dollansky was the quickest in the third session at 13.249 seconds.

(6:13 p.m.) Jason Sides was the quickest in the second session with a lap of 13.037 seconds.

(6:08 p.m.) Brian Brown was the quickest in the first hot-lap session with a lap of 13.847 seconds.

(5:20 p.m.) The drivers are about to put heat in their engines.

(4:52 p.m.) Since we have 35 sprint cars, there will be four, 10-lap heat races. The heats are inverted by four based on the qualifying results (i.e., the fast qualifier starts fourth in the first heat, the second quickest starts fourth in the second heat, etc.). The top two from each heat race advance to the eight-lap dash and the top five in the heats go to the 40-lap feature.

The remaining drivers who didn’t advance to the feature will compete in a 12-lap Last Chance Showdown, which transfers the top four to the feature.

There is some nasty weather on the way, so we might have to change the schedule around a bit in an effort to complete tonight’s event.

(4:48 p.m.) The draw is still open for a few more minutes until the driver’s meeting. Here is an up-to-date driver roster based on the pill draw, so it is also the qualifying order:

77 — Paul McMahan

24 — Terry McCarl

15 — Donny Schatz

83sr — Jac Haudenschild

89 — Rico Abreu

11 — Steve Kinser

21 — Brian Brown

63 — Chad Kemenah

44w — Austen Wheatley

83 — Tim Kaeding

7s — Jason Sides

1 — Sammy Swindell

11vs — John Michael Bunch

14 — Jason Meyers

11k — Kraig Kinser

00 — Jason Statler

82 — Robbie Whitchurch

25 — Bobby McMahan

7 — Craig Dollansky

99 — Kyle Larson

55 — Trey Starks

0 — Jonathan Allard

98m — Mitch Olson

121 — Shane Golobic

4 — Cody Darrah

15h — Pat Harvey

6 — Bill Rose

9 — Joey Saldana

29 — Kerry Madsen

33e — Evan Suggs

3c — Cody Lamar

29w — Willie Croft

83v — Kyle Hirst

5w — Lucas Wolfe

26m — Sean McMahan

(3:33 p.m.) We have 31 sprint cars signed in and three other drivers here who haven’t signed in yet, so we’re one away from tying our season high.

(3:25 p.m.) There is some conflicting information about start times tonight, so I’m not 100 percent. We might be qualifying at 6:45 p.m. (which would make more sense to me) with Opening Ceremonies slated for 7:10 p.m. I’ll post more when I know exactly what the schedule will be.

(3:14 p.m.) The temperature is in the 60s and the sky is a bit overcast on Night 1 of the Mini Gold Cup. Despite a few storms during the past couple of weeks, the pits are dry enough for the teams to use tonight. A few have elected to pit near the entrance of the pit gate where there is some asphalt.

It looks like about two dozen sprint car teams are already here and there are several more waiting to sign in. Our highest car count this season has been 35, which happened at the season opener. I think there’s a good chance we can pass that number tonight.

The driver’s meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. with qualifying tabbed to start around 6 p.m.
