Lanigan Reclaims World of Outlaws Late Model Series Spotlight With Victory In Bubba Army Late Model Winter Nationals Opener

Defending Tour Champion Continues Mastery Of Bubba Raceway Park

By Kevin Kovac, WoO LMS P.R. Director

OCALA, FL – Feb. 15, 2013 – Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., reclaimed the World of Outlaws Late Model Series spotlight on Friday night, capturing the 35-lap opener of the Bubba Army Late Model Winter Nationals at Bubba Raceway Park.

The defending tour champion outdueled BRP star Ivedent Lloyd Jr. of Ocala, Fla., for the lead on lap 20 and never looked back in his familiar Cornett-powered Rocket car. He pulled away following a deciding lap-33 restart, winning by 1.410 seconds over Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., in the Sweeteners Plus Warrior.

Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., finished third in the Rocket Chassis house car after using the outside groove of the three-eighths-mile, D-shaped oval to move up two spots during the green-white-checkered finish. Lloyd settled for a career-best WoO LMS finish of fourth after leading laps 10-19 in a Snow Brothers Chassis machine, and Scott James of Bright, Ind., placed fifth in the Warrior Chassis house car.

Lanigan, 42, earned $7,150 for his first WoO LMS victory of 2013 and the 42nd of his career – an alltime tour record. It was his fourth win in six WoO LMS starts over the past four years at BRP.

“At this place, you definitely have to be elbows up,” said Lanigan, who set a single-season WoO LMS win record with 15 triumphs in 2012. “It’s definitely a racy little track. I kind of like doing that, so this place fits our program pretty good.”

Lanigan demonstrated his mastery of the unique speedway by defeating one of its resident greats in Lloyd, a 46-year-old former BRP champion who knows the track’s nuances like few others. Lloyd started fifth – one spot behind Lanigan – but got to the front first, grabbing the lead on lap 10 from early pacesetter Rick Eckert of York, Pa.

Lloyd’s hometown fans began dreaming of an upset victory by a local, but Lanigan had other ideas. The WoO LMS stalwart overtook James for second on lap 15 and five circuits later sailed around the outside of Lloyd to assume command.

While Lloyd was able to briefly close back up to Lanigan’s rear bumper on lap 30, his bid effectively ended after he slid high through turns one and two on lap 31, allowing McCreadie to snatch second. The driver who lives just miles from BRP ultimately fell to fourth after the race’s final restart on lap 33.

“He came from behind us and took the lead so we definitely were concerned with him,” Lanigan said of Lloyd. “But our car was pretty good and I was just biding my time until I could get up there to him.”

Lloyd was powerless to stop Lanigan’s burst into the lead.

“He went by me pretty quick,” said Lloyd, a former Southern All-Stars Series champion. “He found that outside and just drove by me. I knew there was some traction up there, but I was pretty decent on the bottom and leading the race so I couldn’t really go up there and try it.”

McCreadie, 38, attempted to use that high side in a last-ditch effort to challenge Lanigan after the lap-33 caution period but couldn’t get close enough to threaten. The former WoO LMS titlist wasn’t disappointed with a runner-up finish after struggling in the tour’s season-opening doubleheader last week at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga.

“I figured, Why not try (for the win)?” McCreadie, who started sixth, said of his strategy following the final restart. “I ran out there (on the outside), but I just didn’t steer good enough out there. I gave it a shot, but it’s hard down that backstretch. You lose the nose real easy, and that’s what I was headed toward so I just tried to tuck in (entering turn three). I kind of got into Ivedent a little bit when I did that and I’m sorry for that, but I’m happy we were able to hold on to second. It’s definitely better than we’ve been.”

Richards, 24, ran out of time in his bid for a second consecutive WoO LMS victory. He started third but tumbled out of the top five early in the race, hampered by a tire-compound selection that was too hard.

“We had a pretty good hot rod, but I kind of killed us with tire choice on the left-rear,” said Richards, who took over sole possession of the WoO LMS points lead with his third top-five finish in as many starts this season. “It took a while to get going. I wish it would’ve been 50 laps, but I’ll take the blame on that one.”

Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, Ga., who began the night tied with Richards for the WoO LMS points lead, charged forward from the 18th starting spot to finish sixth. Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., started and finished seventh; Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., who was approved as a 2013 WoO LMS Rookie of the Year contender prior to the evening’s action, placed eighth; Eckert faded his pole position starting spot to a ninth-place finish; and Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., after climbing as high as fifth.

Four caution flags slowed the race. The first came on lap one when Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., was left sitting backwards in turn one following a scrape with Mark Whitener of Middlebourne, Fla. Later, Ray Cook of Brasstown, N.C., slowed on lap 10; Fuller was swept up in a lap-13 backstretch tangle with Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga., and Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa.; and Bub McCool of Vicksburg, Miss., slowed on lap 33.

Thirty-nine cars were signed in for the event.

Richards set a new track record of 13.771 seconds in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials, eclipsing the one-year-old mark of 13.938 seconds held by Lanigan. It was Richards’s 33rd career WoO LMS fast-time honor, tying him with Eckert atop the tour’s alltime list in the category.

Heat winners were Richards, Marlar, Lanigan and Brady Smith. Eric Wells of Hazard, Ky., and Clanton captured the B-Mains, and Clint Smith earned a berth in the A-Main by winning the 10-lap Keyser Manufacturing Last Chance Showdown.

The Bubba Army Late Model Winter Nationals continue on Saturday night (Feb. 16) with a 50-lap A-Main paying $10,000 to win and on Feb. 17 with the inaugural 75-lap ‘Super Sunday Showdown’ offering a $20,000 top prize. Race time is 7 p.m. on Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday.

LIVE UPDATES 2/15: World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Bubba Army Late Model Winter Nationals’ Night 1 At Bubba Raceway Park

OCALA, FL – Feb. 15, 2013 – The World of Outlaws Late Model Series returns to action tonight, kicking off the second annual ‘Bubba Army Late Model Winter Nationals’ at Bubba Raceway Park with a 35-lap A-Main paying $7,000 to win.

Shane Clanton and Josh Richards enter tonight’s program tied for the WoO LMS points lead after each driver scored a win and a runner-up finish in last weekend’s season-opener ‘Winter Freeze’ doubleheader at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga. Richards has one career win at BRP (during last year’s Winter Nationals) but Clanton has never been victorious at the three-eighths-mile, D-shaped oval.

Mr. BRP

10:30 p.m. – Darrell Lanigan outdueled BRP champ Ivedent Lloyd Jr. for the lead on lap 20 and went on to capture the 35-lap A-Main. It was the defending WoO LMS titlist’s first win of 2013 and the fourth of his career at BRP.

Tim McCreadie returned to form with a solid second-place finish, while Josh Richards placed third after going to the outside of the track to pick up two spots after a lap-33 restart. Lloyd, who led laps 10-19, settled for fourth and Scott James placed fifth.

A-Main Finish: 1. Darrell Lanigan, 2. Tim McCreadie, 3. Josh Richards, 4. Ivedent Lloyd Jr., 5. Scott James, 6. Shane Clanton, 7. Mike Marlar, 8. Brandon Sheppard, 9. Rick Eckert, 10. Brady Smith, 11. Kent Robinson, 12. Mason Zeigler, 13. Dillon Wood, 14. Morgan Bagley, 15. Chub Frank, 16. Eric Wells, 17. Tim Fuller, 18. Bub McCool, 19. Jonathan Davenport, 20. Jimmy Mars, 21. Clint Smith, 22. Pat Doar, 23. Ray Cook, 24. Ron Davies, 25. Mark Whitener

Lineup is set

9:25 p.m. – All qualifying is complete after the B-Mains were captured by Eric Wells and Shane Clanton and the Keyser Manufacturing Last Chance Showdown went to Clint Smith.

Smith’s victory earned him a starting spot in the A-Main. He would have used a provisional to gain entry to the headliner, so his triumph moved Kent Robinson into a provisional position along with Chub Frank.

Rick Eckert, who won last year’s Winter Nationals finale, picked the pole position for the 35-lap A-Main. Scott James will start from the outside pole.

Josh Richards, meanwhile, will take the green flag from third – the third straight race he will start from that spot. Alongside him will be defending champ Darrell Lanigan.

The track crew is back on the track for some quick touchups of the surface. It’s estimated that the A-Main will be on the speedway in about 15 minutes.

A-Main Lineup:

Row 1: Rick Eckert/Scott James
Row 2: Josh Richards/Darrell Lanigan
Row 3: Ivedent Lloyd Jr./Tim McCreadie
Row 4: Mike Marlar/Brady Smith
Row 5: Jimmy Mars/Brandon Sheppard
Row 6: Ron Davies/Jonathan Davenport
Row 7: Bub McCool/Mark Whitener
Row 8: Ray Cook/Tim Fuller
Row 9: Eric Wells/Shane Clanton
Row 10: Mason Zeigler/Dillon Wood
Row 11: Morgan Bagley/Pat Doar
Row 12: Clint Smith/Chub Frank
Row 13: Kent Robinson

Racing resuming

8:45 p.m. – Following some quick track-surface work led by ‘Bubba the Love Sponge’ Clem, the pair of 12-lap B-Mains are getting ready to roll onto the racetrack. The A-Main redraw for top-two finishers in each heat will come after the B-Mains, and then the 10-lap Keyser Manufacturing Last Chance Showdown will be contested to put the final starter into the feature.

Quick heats

8:35 p.m. – There wasn’t a single caution flag in the four 10-lap heat races, which were won by Josh Richards, Mike Marlar, Darrell Lanigan and Brady Smith.

Richards turned the fastest heat-race lap (14.032 seconds) while Lanigan built up the largest margin of victory (2.194 seconds). The most dramatic prelim, meanwhile, was the fourth, which saw Smith pull off a final-lap pass to steal the victory from race-long pacesetter Eckert.

The only notable casualty of the heats was Georgia’s Casey Roberts, who slowed early in the fourth heat with front-end problems and pulled off the track.

Tim Fuller also made a late-race move in the fourth qualifier, overtaking Mike Benedum to grab the fourth and final transfer spot. Fuller’s Kennedy Motorsports teammate, Shane Clanton, missed the cut in the third heat, finishing fifth to send him to the B-Main.

Complete orders of finish from the heats can be seen here.

Super fast

8 p.m. – Josh Richards continued his impressive return to the WoO LMS, setting fast time in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials with a Bubba Raceway Park track record lap of 13.771 seconds. He topped the existing standard of 13.938 seconds established last year by Darrell Lanigan.

Richards earned his 33rd career WoO LMS fast-time honor, tying him with Rick Eckert for the tour’s alltime lead in that category.

Mike Marlar was second-fastest at 13.917 seconds, follows by Lanigan (13.928), Eckert (13.974) and young Pennsylvania driver Mason Zeigler (14.108), who enjoyed his best-ever WoO LMS qualifying effort.

Heat races are now lining up and will begin shortly.

Guess who’s fast?

7:25 p.m. – Josh Richards (13.732 seconds) and Darrell Lanigan (13.959) turned the quickest laps in WoO LMS practice. Both drivers won A-Mains during last year’s Bubba Army Late Model Winter Nationals.

Georgia’s Casey Roberts was third-fastest (14.104), followed by Mike Marlar (14.107) and Shane Clanton (14.123).

Birthday girl

7:05 p.m. – Clint Smith has some extra incentive to win tonight’s 35-lap A-Main. Today, after all, is his daughter Jenna’s 20th birthday.

‘Cat Daddy’ has already given a birthday present to his daughter, whose schedule at West Georgia University (she has no classes on Friday) allowed her to travel down to watch her father race tonight and tomorrow night. “I gave her $100 to spend on what she wants,” he said. But he’d like to give her a victory as well.

“I won on her birthday before,” said Smith, remembering his $10,000 DIRTcar UMP-sanctioned Late Model win on Feb. 15, 2008, at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla. “Maybe we can do it again.”

Go-time approaching

6:20 p.m. – With tonight’s program having the latest start time of the weekend so fans have some extra time to make their way to the track, the pit area is only beginning to really come alive. The drivers’ meeting at the WoO LMS control trailer is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by hot laps at 7 p.m. and Ohlins Shocks Time Trials immediately afterward. Heat action is slated to get the green flag at 8 p.m.

Thirty-nine cars are signed in for competition, setting up a program that will include four 10-lap heat races (top four transfer from each); two 12-lap B-Mains (top three qualify from each); and the added 10-lap Keyser Manufacturing ‘Win & You’re In’ Last Chance Race that will put a 25th starter into the 35-lap A-Main.

Rough start

6:10 p.m. – After a rough start to the 2013 season, Tim McCreadie is hoping to flip his fortunes this weekend at BRP.

McCreadie struggled last weekend at Screven, finishing 27th and 16th to send him off to Florida ranked 20th in the points standings, already 82 points out of the lead. He experienced even more problems in the Feb. 10 DIRTcar UMP-sanctioned event at North Florida Speedway in Lake City, slamming into the end of the wall entering the pit area outside turn one during hot laps to abruptly end his night.

While McCreadie escaped the hard North Florida hit (the impact broke off a piece of the concrete wall!) with only some soreness in his back, his Warrior Chassis machine was demolished. His chief mechanic, Craig (Snowman) McCrimmon, reported that the frame was damaged beyond repair, and that the only items truly salvagable afterward were the engine, rear spoiler, roof and cockpit gauges. “Everything else was pretty much junk,” said McCrimmon.

The car is still in McCreadie’s Sweeteners Plus hauler, but it won’t come out until the team stops at the Warrior shop in Tennessee on the way home to exchange it for a new car that the Warrior gang started building the day after McCreadie’s wreck. McCreadie will go to the post tonight — and for the remainder of Florida Speedweeks — in a Warrior car that has only one feature event on its odometer. He debuted the car last fall at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway (he won a heat race before the ‘Fall Brawl’ feature was postponed by rain) and ran it in the first A-Main of last November’s PEAK World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte; he also drove it in last Friday night’s heat at Screven, but it was damaged in a tangle and he used his other car for the rest of the weekend.

McCreadie is hoping all goes well now because he doesn’t have a backup car of his own, though he could conceivably drive one of the Warrior Chassis house cars or his teammate Vic Coffey’s backup Rocket machine in an emergency.

Beautiful day

4:30 p.m. – The sun is shining as temperatures are in the mid-60s today at Bubba Raceway Park, which is co-owned by radio shock-jock ‘Bubba the Love Sponge’ Clem and his partner Tom Bean.

Nearly 40 cars have already signed in for tonight’s action, including all the WoO LMS regulars and such challengers as Billy Moyer, Jimmy Mars, Brady Smith, Mike Marlar, Ray Cook, Jonathan Davenport, Scott James,Gregg Satterlee, Casey Roberts, Dave Hess Jr. and multi-time BRP Late Model champion Ivedent Lloyd Jr.
