Moyer Sweeps Qualifying Night Fast-Time Honors In World of Outlaws World Finals Debut

Veteran Driver Tops 74-Car Field On Opening Night Of Blockbuster Event At The Dirt Track At Charlotte

By Kevin Kovac, WoO LMS P.R. Director

CONCORD, NC – Nov. 7, 2013 – Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., made a spectacular debut at the World of Outlaws World Finals, sweeping fast-time honors in both rounds of Thursday’s Qualifying Night program at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.

The legendary driver was perfect in his first-ever World Finals appearance, topping an ultra-competitive field of 74 cars that were signed in for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series portion of the huge tripleheader weekend. The event also attracted 55 winged machines for the companion World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series meet and 49 entries for the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified action.

World Finals Qualifying Night featured two rounds of WoO LMS time trials – the first to line up Friday night’s heat races and the second to align Saturday night’s preliminaries.

Moyer, 56, turned a lap of 15.413 seconds in Group ‘A’ during the first round of time trials and bettered that with a circuit of 15.304 seconds in Group ‘B’ during Round 2. His clockings were the overall fastest of both qualifying legs, giving him the 17th and 18th WoO LMS fast-time honors of his career.

The three-time WoO LMS champion also became the third Late Model driver to sweep both qualifying rounds of the seven-year-old World Finals, joining Steve Shaver of Vienna, W.Va. (2007) and Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga. (2010).

Moyer’s standout performance came in what was surprisingly his first stab at the World Finals. He traveled to Charlotte to compete in the 2009 weekend but headed home without even entering the Qualifying Night program after pulling out of the rescheduled WoO LMS Topless Showdown that preceded that year’s World Finals.

“I came out here last year just as a fan and watched,” said Moyer, who still holds the one-lap track record at The Dirt Track (14.672 seconds on April 18, 2008). “It was a good show to get to watch all of the classes and the track was good. That kinda made me want to go ahead and come back this year.”

With the evening’s large field split for both rounds of qualifying, drivers in Group ‘A’ competed for starting spots in Heats 1-3 on Friday and Saturday and those in Group ‘B’ qualified for positions in Heat 4-6 both nights. Moyer will start from the pole position in Friday night’s first heat and Saturday evening’s fourth preliminary.

“We haven’t been here for a while,” said Moyer, “but to come back and run as well as we have so far, that’s a good thing for sure.”

WoO LMS regulars Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., and Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Ga., also registered group fast times during Qualifying Night. Lanigan was quickest in Group ‘B’ during Round 1 with a lap of 15.484 seconds, while Clanton was best in Group ‘B’ during Round 2 with a circuit of 15.619 seconds.

Clanton’s strong showing during the second round was a complete turnaround from the problems he experienced earlier in the night. During Round 1 he was 35th-fastest out of 37 qualifiers in Group ‘A’ after hitting a rut and breaking the right-front frame rail on his Kennedy Motorsports car.

WoO LMS points leader Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., who sits on the cusp of clinching his third career WoO LMS championship, was fourth-fastest in his group during Round 1 and second-fastest in his group during Round 2. He will start Friday night’s first heat from the outside pole and Saturday night’s second heat from the pole position.

The World Finals continue on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 8-9), with gates opening at 3 p.m. and hot laps scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. each day. Each card will include a 50-lap A-Main for the WoO LMS, a 30-lap A-Main for the WoO STP Sprint Car Series and a 40-lap headliner for the Super DIRTcar Series big-block Modifieds.

LIVE UPDATES 11/7: World of Outlaws World Finals Qualifying Night At The Dirt Track At Charlotte

CONCORD, NC – Nov. 7, 2013 – The World of Outlaws Late Model Series begins its concluding weekend of 2013 action this weekend at The Dirt Track at Charlotte with the seventh annual World of Outlaws World Finals Qualifying Night.

Two rounds of WoO LMS Ohlins Shocks Time Trials will be contested tonight — the first setting the heat lineups for Friday night, the second aligning Saturday evening’s heats. The WoO Sprint Car Series will also run two rounds of time trials this evening, while the Super DIRTcar Series big-block Modifieds will compete in two sets of qualifying heat races.

For live updates of all the news, pit notes and results from tonight’s action, click the ‘Full Story’ link below. Be sure to refresh your browser throughout the night to see the latest information.

Moyer gets out the broom

11:50 p.m. – Billy Moyer completed a perfect night, leading the way in second round qualifying with a lap of 15.304 seconds in Group ‘B’ to sweep the evening’s overall fast-time honors.

Moyer’s overall fastest lap in Group ‘B’ came over John Blankenship (15.469). Jeremy Miller was third-fastest (15.595), followed by Billy Ogle Jr. (15.672) and Gregg Satterlee (15.729).

Shane Clanton, meanwhile, was fastest in Group ‘A,’ recovering from frame damage during Round 1 qualifying that left him nearly last in his group. Josh Richards was second-fastest at 15.778 seconds, followed by Tyler Reddick (15.792), Darrell Lanigan (15.813) and Scott Bloomquist (15.817).

Full results from both rounds of time trials are now posted here.

T-Mac on the attack

10:50 p.m. – Tim McCreadie turned around his big-block Modified night in the division’s second round of qualifying, winning the fifth heat race with an outside pass of New Yorker Gary Tomkins with two laps remaining. He will redraw for a top-five starting spot in Saturday night’s 40-lap feature.

Fellow double-duty racers Tim Fuller and Billy Decker didn’t fare as well in Round 2 of big-block Modified qualifying. Both fell short of transfer positions in their heat races.

The second round of WoO LMS time trials are currently underway….

Vets shine

9:45 p.m. – Experience came out on top in the first round of WoO LMS time trials as Billy Moyer was fastest in Group ‘A’ and Darrell Lanigan was quickest in Group ‘B.’ Moyer’s lap of 15.413 seconds was the fastest overall of Round 1, giving him the 17th WoO LMS fast-time honor of his career.

Moyer bested some heavy hitters in Group ‘A.’ Rick Eckert was second-fastest at 15.582 seconds, followed by Scott Bloomqusit (15.616), Josh Richards (15.635) and Billy Ogle Jr. (15.687).

Lanigan, meanwhile, turned a lap of 15.484 seconds late in Group ‘B’ to earn a pole position starting spot in Friday night’s fourth heat. Texas driver Chris Brown, who arrived at the track just prior to the start of hot laps, ripped off a lap of 15.710 seconds at the end of Round 2 to end up second on the results chart. Modified ace Billy Decker was third-fastest at 15.725 seconds — after topping the Group ‘B’ speed chart for a brief moment before being overtaken by Lanigan — with Dennis Erb Jr. timing fourth (15.739) and teenager Tyler Reddick placing fifth (15.776).

WoO LMS regular Shane Clanton’s history of World Finals misfortune continued during Round 1 time trials. He managed only the 35th-fastest time in Group ‘A’ after he caught a rut during his qualifying attempt and breaking the right-front frame rail on his Capital Race Car.

Get your votes in

8:25 p.m. – Don’t forget that as you’re reading this you can help your favorite WoO LMS driver earn a season-ending $500 bonus by getting on Twitter or Facebook and giving them your vote for the 2013 DirtonDirt.com WoO LMS Most Popular Driver award.

Voting for the contest began with the start of tonight’s racing program and will continue through the end of the World Finals on Saturday night. Just Tweet or post to Facebook the name of your favorite Woo LMS driver along with the hashtag #WoOFanFav and your vote will be counted by DirtonDirt.com staff.

The winner of the $500 DirtonDirt.com WoO LMS Most Popuarl Driver Award will be announced during Sunday night’s WoO LMS Awards Banquet at the Great Wolf Lodge in Concord, N.C.

Remember, of course, that only this year’s 11 WoO LMS regulars are eligible to receive votes. That group of drivers includes Josh Richards, Darrell Lanigan, Shane Clanton, Rick Eckert, Tim McCreadie, Tim Fuller, Eric Wells, Chub Frank, Bub McCool, Morgan Bagley and Clint Smith.

T-Mac falls short

8:20 p.m. – Tim McCreadie failed to make the cut in the first big-block Modified heat, finishing fifth in the 4-Star Racing machine that he runs in selected Modified events amidst his busy dirt Late Model schedule. He will have to run a consolation tomorrow night.

Tim Fuller and Billy Decker, meanwhile, were able to transfer into Friday night’s big-block Modified feature. Fuller placed third in the second heat and Decker was fourth in the fourth prelim.

The start of WoO LMS Round 1 qualifying is just moments away from getting the green flag….

Doubling up

7:35 p.m. – As the first round of WoO Sprint Car time trials near completion, dirt Late Model teams are carefully watching the racing surface and considering the changes they want to make to their cars for the upcoming full-fender qualifying.

Three dirt Late Model entrants, meanwhile, are also thinking about how they want their big-block Modifieds set up for the division’s heat-race action.

WoO LMS regulars Tim McCreadie and Tim Fuller and DIRTcar big-block Mod star/sometime dirt Late Model competitor Billy Decker are pulling double-duty this weekend, running in both the WoO LMS and big-block Modified shows. Decker is the only one of the trio who has never won a big-block Modified feature at Charlotte.

With the two sets of big-block Modified heat races aligned from time hot laps earlier tonight, McCreadie secured starting spots of sixth (Friday heats) and fourth (Saturday); Fuller will start  fourth (Friday) and fifth (Saturday); and Decker will start fourth (Friday) and fifth (Saturday). Five heats will be contested during each round of qualifying, with the top-four finishers from each transferring to the 40-lap/$8,000-to-win features.

Bros on the road

6:20 p.m. – Rising star Devin Moran is in an unusual position this weekend. Not only is he making a rare start without his legendary father Donnie by his side, he’s also driving a car that’s not from his dad’s motorsports stable.

With Donnie, who won the WoO LMS finale of the inaugural World Finals in 2013, opting to stay home in Ohio to watch a younger son, Tristan, play a high-school football game tomorrow night, Devin, 19, and his younger brother (and crew chief) Wylie made the trip to Charlotte by themselves. Devin has come south to steer the MasterSbilt No. 1K fielded by Maryland’s Bruce Kane, who has a relationship with the Moran family through his ‘All That Wraps’ graphics business.

This weekend marks just the second time in Devin’s budding career that he’s driven a car from outside his family circle. Earlier this year he piloted Brad Malcuit’s mount to an eighth-place finish in a one-off appearance at Ohio’s NAPA Wayne County Speedway.

Blankenship looking good

6:15 p.m. – Reigning World 100 champion John Blankenship set the standard in Late Model hot laps, circling the four-tenths-mile oval in 14.760 seconds to top the speed chart.

Mike Marlar, who is making his third start in a Rocket No. 157 owned by fellow Tennessean Ronnie Delk, was second-fast in practice at 14.834 seconds. Chris Madden logged in third-fastest (14.948), Shane Clanton was fourth-fastest (14.965) and Casey Roberts was fifth-fastest (15.023).

The first round of WoO Sprint Car time trials will be rolling onto the track shortly. The first round of Super DIRTcar Series big-block Modified heat races will follow and then Round 1 of WoO LMS time trials will begin.

Cat Daddy’s new ride

5:15 p.m. – Todd Wood has heard it more than once today: “Hey, your son sure has grown up fast.”

What, you say, does that mean? Well, with WoO LMS veteran Clint Smith driving Wood’s Rocket No. 1 this weekend – stepping in for Dillon’s 22-year-old son Dillon – everyone is busting Wood’s chops about having a 48-year-old son. He’s playing right along with the jokes.

“Yep,” quipped Wood, “my boy grew up.”

Dillon Wood, who started the year chasing WoO LMS Rookie of the Year honors before pulling back to a more regional schedule, hasn’t raced since mid-September as he considers his career path. His father decided to continue fielding his car, however, putting Mike Marlar in the seat for last month’s Dirt Track World Championship and teaming with fellow Floridian Ivedent Lloyd Jr. at last week’s National 100 at East Alabama Motor Speedway.

As Wood and Smith were driving their haulers back from East Alabama, they spoke by phone and hatched a plan to race together this weekend. Smith put a new body on Wood’s machine – complete with a ‘CAT’ added to Wood’s familiar No. 1 – and off to Charlotte they went.

Wood and Smith are discussing the possibility of forming a team in 2014. Smith, who has struggled to keep his self-owned operation afloat financially this season, would relish the opportunity.

“Racing with Todd would really help me out,” said Smith, who will finish 11th in the 2013 WoO LMS, missing a points-fund-paying position. “I would be able to run some really good stuff and regroup my own stuff. We’ll see what happens.”

Huge field

4:15 p.m. – A total of 74 cars have signed in for tonight’s action (two more drivers, Chris Brown and Kevin Wilson, just pulled into the pits). All of the competitors are currently at the WoO LMS trailer listening to tour race director conduct the drivers’ meeting.

Both of tonight’s qualifying rounds will be broken into two groups — with Group ‘A’ timing for starting spots in heats 1-3 on Friday and Saturday nights, and Group ‘B’ time-trialers going for positions in heats 4-6 on Friday and Saturday evenings. All drivers drew two pill numbers, giving them different qualifying positions in each round of time trials.

Tonight’s WoO LMS time trials will be last in the rotation, following WoO Sprint Car time trials and Super DIRTcar Series big-block Modified heats.
