Richards Holds Off Clanton’s Late-Race Challenge To Capture Saturday’s ‘Winter Freeze’ Finale At Screven Motor Speedway

Returning Two-Time Champion Records 40th Career Win On World of Outlaws Late Model Series

By Kevin Kovac, WoO LMS P.R. Director

SYLVANIA, GA – Feb. 9, 2013 – Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., reached a World of Outlaws Late Model Series milestone in style, holding off a furious late-race challenge from Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, Ga., to capture Saturday night’s 50-lap ‘Winter Freeze’ finale at Screven Motor Speedway.

The returning two-time champion was never headed after passing Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., for the lead on lap six, but the outcome was in doubt all the way to the checkered flag. Richards had to contend with heavy lapped traffic and a hungry Clanton over the final circuits to register his 40th career victory on the WoO LMS and collect $10,150.

Richards, 24, drove his Valvoline-sponsored Rocket across the finish line with a slight 0.405-second edge on the 37-year-old Clanton, whose bid to sweep the season-opening WoO LMS weekend in the Kennedy Motorsports Capital Race Car fell one spot short. Both Richards and Clanton recorded finishes of first and second in the doubleheader at the three-eighths-mile oval, sending them to the next tour events in Florida deadlocked for the points lead – the circuit’s first tie atop the standings since Richards and Tim McCreadie shared the position after the 11th race of the 2010 season.

Marlar, who started second and led laps 1-5, settled for a close third-place finish in the Bryson Motorsports Rocket. He fell back as far as fourth before rallying to race within striking distance of the leaders during the event’s final stages.

Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., advanced from the sixth starting spot to place fourth in the Team Dillon Warrior mount and WoO LMS Rookie of the Year contender Eric Wells of Hazard, Ky., scored a career-best tour finish of fifth after starting 13th in a Team Zero by Bloomquist machine.

Richards, who left the WoO LMS last spring to move south and compete on the NASCAR Nationwide Series, plans to chase the World of Outlaws title again this season as he continues pursuing a NASCAR ride opportunity. He made clear his championship worthiness by refusing to fold under Clanton’s intense pressure during the 29-lap run of uninterrupted green-flag racing that closed the A-Main.

“I knew Clanton’s been really, really good and we had a lot of tire chatter the last five or six laps, so I knew he was gonna be trying to come,” said Richards, who moved within one victory of tying defending WoO LMS champion Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., atop the tour’s alltime win list. “We just had to try and stay on the infield and try to keep the right-rear out of the black – and just try to hold on. I think a few more laps he probably would’ve gotten us, but it was just enough.

“Last night we ran second but we just didn’t feel that great, so we just kind of went back with what we know for the heat race. From that point on the car just picked up and I knew we had something to try to win tonight.”

Richards, who started third, celebrated his first-ever triumph at Screven. He had finished as high as second in his four previous WoO LMS starts.

Clanton, who started fourth, got the nose of his car underneath Richards’s several times and nearly ran into the back of Richards’s machine when he charged off turn four to begin the final lap, but he couldn’t pull off a pass.

“My strategy was to just go in the corner as hard as I could and hope I’d stick,” said Clanton. “We rubbed a little bit coming to the white flag and Josh done what he should’ve done – just protect the bottom.”

Clanton wasn’t disappointed in his performance, however. Leaving Screven with a share of the points lead put him in a nice frame of mind.

“It’s a great start to the season,” said Clanton. “We’re excited to be where we are.”

Clanton’s Kennedy Motorsports teammate, Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., finished sixth after briefly climbing to fifth before the halfway mark. Rick Eckert of York, Pa., was seventh; Lanigan placed eighth after winning a B-Main and starting 17th; Pat Doar of New Richmond, Wis., faded from the pole position starting spot to finish ninth; and Chesley Dixon of Swainsboro, Ga., rounded out the top 10.

Four caution flags slowed the A-Main. Three were for slowing cars: Casey Roberts of Toccoa, Ga., on lap three, Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga., on lap 13 and Scott James of Bright, Ind., on lap 21. The only tangle came on lap 14 when James and Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., stacked up in turn one due to scramble ahead of them.

Thirty-eight cars entered the event.

Marlar was fastest in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials with a lap of 14.133 seconds. It was his fourth career fast-time honor on the WoO LMS.

Heat winners were Marlar, Richards, McDowell and Fuller. The B-Mains were captured by Lanigan and Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y.

The WoO LMS now heads to Florida for a pair of tripleheaders. The Bubba Army Late Model Winter Nationals runs from Feb. 15-17 at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, and the 42nd UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville includes World of Outlaws programs on Feb. 21, 22 and 23.

Josh is back

11:45 p.m. Nearly an hour ago Josh Richards took the checkered flag first in the 50-lap A-Main, earning his first victory of the 2013 and the 40th of his career on the WoO LMS.

This triumph didn’t come easily for Richards, who grabbed the lead from Mike Marlar on lap six and was never headed but had to hold off a furious late-race challenge from Shane Clanton. Richards won by .405 of a second over Clanton, whose runner-up finish sent him off to Florida tied for the points lead with Richards.

A-Main Finish: 1. Josh Richards, 2. Shane Clanton, 3. Mike Marlar, 4. Dale McDowell, 5. Eric Wells, 6. Tim Fuller, 7. Rick Eckert, 8. Darrell Lanigan, 9. Pat Doar, 10. Chesley Dixon, 11. Only A-Main left

10:20 p.m. With the twin 12-lap B-Mains complete — Darrell Lanigan won the first over Dillon Wood and Morgan Bagley, and Tim McCreadie captured the second over Gregg Satterlee and Larry Timms — teams are making final preparations for the 50-lap A-Main. The field will soon be lining up to take to the track.

Post-heat notes

9:25 p.m. After a runner-up finish in his heat, Pat Doar, who made the feature redraw just four times in 40 events last season, drew the pole position for the A-Main. Mike Marlar will start second, followed by Josh Richards, Shane Clanton, Chesley Dixon, Dale McDowell, Ron Davies and Tim Fuller… Vic Coffey was running fifth midway through the first heat when he spun between turns three and four… Coffey’s Sweeteners Plus teammate, Tim McCreadie, also brought out a caution flag with a turn-four spin on lap three of the third heat. He recovered to miss transferring by just a single position… Brandon Sheppard experienced mechanical trouble and didn’t take the green flag in the second heat. His crew is attempting to repair the car, but it appears he might run out of time to make the first B-Main… Austin Hubbard and Gregg Satterlee tangled between turns three and four on lap two of the fourth heat, leaving Satterlee sitting on the track to bring out a caution flag. Ray Cook also caught a piece of the incident but continued on with body damage…

Hot heats

9:10 p.m. Mike Marlar continued his perfect night, winning the first heat over Shane Clanton. The Tennessee driver’s lap of 14.001 seconds was the fastest turned by anyone in the four preliminaries.

Josh Richards wasn’t far off Marlar’s lap times in winning the second heat, however, ripping off a fast circuit of 14.049 seconds. Dale McDowell and Tim Fuller also captured heats.

Full heat results can be found here.

On the gas

7:55 p.m. After being swept up in a heat-race accident last night, Mike Marlar scratched from the remainder of the program. He pulled out his backup Bryson Motorsports car for tonight’s action and the move has already paid off with fast-time honors.

Marlar blazed around the three-eighths-mile in 14.133 seconds — over three-tenths of a second quicker than second-fastest qualifier Ron Davies (14.445). It was Marlar’s fourth career WoO LMS fast-time honor.

Dale McDowell was third-fastest (14.472), Pat Doar was fourth-quick (14.526) and Friday-night winner Shane Clanton was fifth-fastest (14.534), earning him an outside pole starting spot in the first heat alongside Marlar.

Of the quickest qualifiers, Doar might have authored the most uplifting run. The Wisconsin driver, who is running a Capital Race Car this season in hopes of turning around his moribund ’12 campaign, enjoyed his best time-trial effort since he was second-fastest on July 10, 2012, at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D. — his lone top-five qualifying performance of the ’12 season.

Darrell Lanigan, meanwhile, experienced a rare occurence: a poor time-trial lap. He qualified 34th-fastest of 38 cars, timing in at 15.391 seconds.

Of course, it appeared that Lanigan might have been a victim of circumstance more than poor setup. He was one of the first drivers to hit the track for time trials and he reportedly found the track surface extremely slick and “greasy” following the Mini-Sprint practice that immediately preceeded WoO LMS qualifying. WoO LMS rookie Morgan Bagley and Scott James, who finished third last night, also might have put up unexpectedly poor qualifying laps due to going out early.

Lucky find

7:15 p.m. A short time ago, when a group of cars rolled onto the track in turn three for hot laps, WoO LMS director Tim Christman and other observers noticed something small and black fall off of a Late Model. Christman moved to the general area and discovered that the item was an iPhone.

Figuring out who the iPhone belonged to took some detective work. After Christman found driver Casey Barrow’s name on the iPhone’s ‘Recent Calls’ list, he took the device to Barrow’s pit stall and it was reunited with its owner, a member of Barrow’s pit crew who apparently left it on Barrow’s car — and was fortunate that it wasn’t over on the racetrack.

Rapid rookie

7:10 p.m. WoO LMS Rookie of the Year contender Eric Wells showed some speed in hot laps, turning the fastest lap at 14.447 seconds. He finished 10th in last night’s A-Main.

Shane Clanton was second-fastest in practice at 14.599 seconds, showing he’s ready to bid for a sweep of the weekend. Casey Roberts, who finished fifth last night, was third-fastest at 14.693 seconds, followed by Friday runner-up Josh Richards (14.744) and defending WoO LMS champion Darrell Lanigan (14.749).

Ohlins Shocks Time Trials are set to begin shortly, following the completion of hot laps for the Mini-Sprint division.

New Stray Cats

6:50 p.m. – Clint Smith wasn’t thrilled with his eighth-place finish in last night’s 40-lap A-Main — not after he took the green flag from the third starting spot — but he still couldn’t help cracking a smile.

“This is my best start with the World of Outlaws in a long time,” said Smith, a regular since the tour was reincarnated in 2004 under the World Racing Group banner. “We should’ve been better last night, but we had no traction, sidebite — nothing. We missed it, but we got a top 10, and considering I have a virgin crew, I’m happy with that.”

Indeed, Smith is beginning the season with a pair of youngsters providing him mechanical assistance. His daughter Jenna’s boyfriend, Andy Wilson, 20, and Chris Monroe, 19, are Cat Daddy’s green-but-gungho crew guys.

As for Smith’s previous opening-night WoO LMS performances, his best was a victory in the 2006 lidlifter at Golden Isles Speedway in Brunswick, Ga. He finished sixth in the ’07 opener at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla., but that was his only other top-10 finish in the first race of the season. Prior to last night, his best run in an opener was 14th in 2008 at Volusia.

Getting ready

6:35 p.m. – Engines are fired and teams are preparing for the imminent start of hot laps. A total of 38 cars are signed in for tonight’s action; the only driver who entered last night’s program and has not returned is Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., whose car was sidelined by mechanical trouble.

Not a sweet night

5:30 p.m. As Sweeteners Plus Racing teammates for a decade, Tim McCreadie and Vic Coffey have raced side-by-side countless times. Fortunately, though, they haven’t been involved in many crashes together — crashes like the one they were in last night.

On the first lap of the A-Main, outside polesitter Dale McDowell slid sideways across the track in turns one and two due to a broken left-front suspension, causing a jam-up behind him. Coffey ended up going sideways in the middle of the scramble and was hit in the rearend by McCreadie, with the contact momentarily lifting Coffey’s car off the ground.

“I could read that coming right at me,” said Coffey, pointing at the Sweeteners Plus logo on the hood of McCreadie’s car while standing in the pit area earlier today. “I knew he wasn’t gonna be able to miss me. You’re haulin’ ass here, so if you miss a deal like last night you’re more lucky than good.”

The front end of McCreadie’s car went under Coffey’s rear so far that McCreadie’s hood scoop was torn off. McCreadie and Coffey were both forced out of the race, and their crews worked until about 3 a.m. making repairs to the cars.

“I can’t remember too many times that we’ve crashed together,” said Coffey. “There was a crash at Lernerville a couple years ago when Timmy flipped, and there was a crash at Tazewell (Tenn.). I’m glad it hasn’t happened too often.”

Coffey, who doesn’t plan to follow the complete WoO LMS schedule this season in order to spend more time at home (including with his 16-year-old son Kyle, a budding 600cc Micro-Sprint racer), and McCreadie will run the cars they were in for last night’s feature. Coffey’s Rocket was new last night, as was McCreadie’s Warrior.

It’s a bright, bright, bright, sunshiny day

3:45 p.m. – The skies are blue and the sun is shining today over Screven Motor Speedway, which is a beehive of activity in advance of tonight’s ‘Winter Freeze’ finale. Many members of race teams that aren’t prepping their cars in the pit area are either chowing down at Screven’s big concession stand ($10 dinners featuring meat and three sides are on sale), racing Sprint Karts against each other at the complex’s fun-kart track or watching an afternoon go-kart meet at the Gamecock Speedway dirt kart track on the grounds.

Temperatures are approaching 70 today — a far cry from the frigid, wind-swept conditions that prevailed during last year’s Saturday-night ‘Winter Freeze’ show.
