Lanigan & Richards Share Fast-Time Honors On Opening Night Of PEAK Motor Oil World of Outlaws World Finals Presented by NAPA

CONCORD, NC – Nov. 1, 2012 – Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., and Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va. – the only two-time World of Outlaws Late Model Series champions since 2004 – shared fast-time honors during Thursday night’s Kellogg’s Qualifying Night at the PEAK Motor Oil World of Outlaws World Finals Presented by NAPA Auto Parts at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.

Friendly rivals who two years ago battled for the WoO LMS title at The Dirt Track, Lanigan and Richards topped a massive field of 72 dirt Late Models that were signed in for two rounds of Ohlins Shocks Time Trials. The qualifying program kicked off a blockbuster tripleheader that also attracted 50 winged machines for the companion World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series meet and 40 entries for the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified action.

Kellogg’s Qualifying Night featured two rounds of WoO LMS time trials – the first to line up Friday night’s heat races and the second to align Saturday night’s preliminaries.

On an evening that saw him clinch his second career WoO LMS points crown simply by entering the competition, Lanigan, 42, blistered the four-tenths-mile oval in 15.155 seconds during the first round of time trials. It was his sixth fast time of 2012, giving him sole possession of first place in the category ahead of York, Pa.’s Rick Eckert.

Lanigan went on to time fifth-fastest in the second round of qualifying, leaving him just short of becoming the third driver in history to sweep both legs of WoO LMS time trials during the PEAK World Finals Presented by NAPA. His circuit of 15.522 seconds was just a hair off Richards’s quick lap of 15.425 seconds – even though Lanigan went on the track next to last in the qualifying order.

“We had a real good car,” Lanigan said of his Cornett-powered Rocket. “We missed out on a chance to sweep (the fast times) because the track definitely slowed down by the time we went out in the second round, but we’ll take two top-five qualifying runs. We know we’ll be on the pole for two heats.”

Lanigan, who previously registered a PEAK World Finals Presented by NAPA fast-time award in the first round of qualifying in 2009, will start from the pole position in the first heat on Friday night and the fifth heat on Saturday night.

Richards, 24, steered his father’s Rocket Chassis house car to his fourth WoO LMS fast time of 2012 despite running an abbreviated schedule while pursuing a pavement career on the NASCAR Nationwide Series. It marked the second straight year that he set fast time in one round of qualifying during the PEAK World Finals Presented by NAPA.

While Richards will start Saturday night’s first heat from the pole position, his seventh-fastest lap in Round 1 of time trials handed him the outside pole for Friday night’s first preliminary.

Lanigan was one of four drivers to time inside the top six in both rounds to secure a pair of pole-position starts, joining 2011 WoO LMS champion Eckert, Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., and Don O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind.

Other pole position winners for Friday’s program were Eric Wells of Hazard, Ky., and Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., while Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., will start a Saturday heat from the inside of Row 1.

The PEAK World Finals Presented by NAPA continue on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 2-3), with gates opening at 3 p.m. and hot laps scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. each day. Each card will include a 50-lap A-Main for the WoO LMS, a 30-lap A-Main for the WoO Sprint Car Series and a 40-lap headliner for the Super DIRTcar Series big-block Modifieds.

Saturday night’s World Finals program will be televised by the SPEED cable network from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight ET.

LIVE UPDATES 11/1: PEAK Motor Oil World of Outlaws World Finals Presented by NAPA Auto Parts At The Dirt Track At Charlotte

CONCORD, NC – Nov. 1, 2012 – The World of Outlaws Late Model Series returns to The Dirt Track at Charlotte this weekend, kicking off the PEAK Motor Oil World of Outlaws World Finals Presented by NAPA Auto Parts tonight with Kellogg’s Qualifying Night.

Two rounds of WoO LMS Ohlins Shocks Time Trials will be contested — the first setting the heat lineups for Friday night, the second aligning Saturday evening’s heats. The WoO Sprint Car Series will also run two rounds of time trials this evening, while the Super DIRTcar Series big-block Modifieds will compete in two sets of qualifying heat races.

Rocket Man leads the way

10:05 p.m. – Round 2 of Ohlins Shocks Time Trials is complete with Josh Richards’s lap of 15.425 seconds earning him fast-time honors. It’s the second straight PEAK World Finals by NAPA in which he has topped one round of qualifying.

Don O’Neal was second-fastest at 15.433 seconds, followed by Chris Madden (15.510), Rick Eckert (15.512) and Darrell Lanigan (15.522).

Full results from time trials are posted here.

Round 2

9:30 p.m. – The second round of Ohlins Shocks Time Trials are now rolling. Darrell Lanigan is bidding to become the third driver to sweep fast-time honors in both ends of WoO LMS qualifying at the PEAK World Finals by NAPA, joining Steve Shaver (2007) and Jonathan Davenport (2010).

It’s the champ

8:35 p.m. – Darrell Lanigan has begun his quest for a first career win at The Dirt Track in impressive fashion, blazing to fast-time honors in the Round 1 of qualifying with lap of 15.155 seconds. He bested Eric Wells (15.242), Rick Eckert (15.252), Chris Madden (15.294) and Don O’Neal (15.372).

Full Round 1 Time Trials results can be seen here

Qualifying underway

7:55 p.m. – Round 1 of Ohlins Shocks Time Trials began a few minutes ago. Through 15 cars, Kentucky’s Eric Wells leads the way with a lap of 15.242 seconds. Scott Bloomquist is currently second at 15.388 seconds and Jason Feger is third at 15.590 seconds.

Unexpected ride

7:15 p.m. – Coleby Frye of Dover, Pa., got a last-minute opportunity to compete in the PEAK World Finals thanks to DIRTcar Northeast Modified driver/owner Carey Terrance, who phoned Frye on Monday to ask if he’d like to drive the single dirt Late Model in the stable of Terrance’s Rez Racing team. Frye quickly accepted the seat in the No. 77x, which Terrance’s regular DIRTcar 358-Modified driver, Dale Planck of Homer, N.Y., drove to a top-five finish in this year’s WoO LMS event at Quebec’s Autodrome Granby.

“I met Carey and his guys at Mohawk (International Raceway in Hogansburg, N.Y.) a couple years ago when I was working for Austin (Hubbard on the WoO LMS),” said Frye (at right in picture below). “I came down here last year to help them (Planck crashed in a World Finals prelim and didn’t the Late Model), and Carey called me on Monday and asked if I’d like to drive his Late Model because Planck wasn’t coming down. I said, ‘Sure.'”

Busy guys

7:05 p.m. – Three drivers — WoO LMS regulars Tim McCreadie and Tim Fuller, and fellow New Yorker Billy Decker — are pulling double-duty this weekend, competing in both the Late Model and big-block Modified competition. McCreadie, of course, swept last year’s pair of PEAK World Finals big-block features and is returning to the seat of the 4-Star Racing Modified to shoot for a repeat.

With Round 1 of Sprint Car time trials nearing completion, the four 10-lap big-block Modified heat races for Friday night’s program will soon hit the track. Fuller starts on the pole in Heat 1 and Decker has the pole for Heat 4, while McCreadie will start fourth in Heat 2. Later, in the Saturday-night round of preliminary races, McCreadie starts second in Heat 1, Fuller starts third in Heat 3 and Decker starts fifth in Heat 4.

Leaving the storm behind

6:35 p.m. – Several dirt Late Model teams based in the Northeast rode out Superstorm Sandy earlier this week, but those surveyed reported no major problems at their homesteads or with their travel plans to Charlotte.

The Mark Richards Racing Enterprises team did drive through the heavy snow that fell in the West Virginia mountains — there was only a couple inches at the Rocket Chassis shop, but the snow was measured in feet not all that far away — and still made it to Charlotte in about five hours yesterday.

We have heard of fans from the Northeast who had to cancel plans to attend this weekend’s action due to damage and/or power loss at their homes and/or businesses. Our thoughts go out to all those who have been affected by the storm.

Good start for Darrell

6:20 p.m. – Darrell Lanigan was quickest in tonight’s hot laps, turning a lap of 15.696 seconds on the four-tenths-mile oval. Steve Francis was second on the speed chart at 15.783 seconds, followed by Rick Eckert (15.802), Shane Clanton (15.819) and Eric Wells (15.859).

There will be some time before the Late Models return to the racetrack. WoO Sprint Car practice is currently nearing completion, and then opening ceremonies, Round 1 of Sprint Car time trials and big-block Modified heat races will be contested before the first round of Late Model qualifying gets the green flag.

Congrats, champ

5:55 p.m. – It’s official: Darrell Lanigan is the 2012 World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion.

Not there was any doubt about that fact entering this weekend’s action, but Lanigan mathematically clinched his second career title when he signed in for tonight’s qualifying action, earning him a minimum of 60 show-up points for each of the weekend’s Late Model programs.

Lanigan heads onto the track tonight having already been in the Charlotte area for a full day. He arrived on Tuesday night so he could participate in a day-long media tour on Wednesday organized by the Charlotte Motor Speedway media department. Lanigan joined presumptive 2012 WoO Sprint Car champion Donny Schatz in visiting radio stations in the morning, dining with print media members at CMS during the afternoon and, finally, doing interviews with local television affiliates.

Huge turnout

4:15 p.m. – The drivers’ meeting has just been completed for this weekend’s superb dirt Late Model field, which numbers 72 cars strong (updated with a late addition). Hot laps are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and the Kellogg’s Qualifying Night action is set to get the green flag at 6 p.m.
