Victory At Cornwall Motor Speedway Gives Lanigan Sweep Of World of Outlaws Late Model Series Doubleheader In Canada

Defending Tour Champion Inherits Lead From McCreadie, Beats Resurgent Clint Smith To Finish Line

By Kevin Kovac, WoO LMS P.R. Director

CORNWALL, ONT – June 23, 2013 – Stick a maple leaf on Darrell Lanigan’s car and call him the King of Canada.

The defending World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion from Union, Ky., completed an undefeated trip north of the border with the national tour on Sunday night, outrunning the resurgent Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga., down the stretch to capture the 50-lap A-Main at Cornwall Motor Speedway.

“I kind of like coming up here to Canada,” said Lanigan, whose $10,650 triumph backed up his WoO LMS score three days earlier at Brighton (Ont.) Speedway. “We always seem to run well at these tracks up here.”

Lanigan, 43, benefitted from a dose of good fortune to win his series-leading sixth race of 2013. After race-long leader Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., had his full straightaway edge over Lanigan wiped out by a lap-28 caution flag, the restart saw McCreadie slow on the homestretch due to a broken driveshaft and spin into the infield – a dramatic turn of events that handed the top spot to Lanigan for good.

The 48-year-old Smith chased Lanigan’s Rocket car for the final 19 laps, drawing within striking distance of the leader with six circuits remaining. But the race’s fifth and final caution flag, on lap 47, cleared lapped traffic from the picture and allowed Lanigan to pull away, leaving Smith to settle for a season-best runner-up finish in his Rocket mount, 1.703 seconds behind the victor.

Bub McCool of Vicksburg, Miss., started and finished third in his Victory Circle machine. He slipped back as far as fifth midway through the race before rallying to match his best WoO LMS outing of the season.

DIRTcar big-block Modified star Billy Decker of Unadilla, N.Y., who started 10th, placed fourth in the Gypsum Racing Rocket, earning his second top-five finish in three WoO LMS starts over the past five days. Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Ga., completed the top five with a quiet-but-steady run in the Kennedy Motorsports Capital Race Car.

Lanigan swept the night at the high-banked, quarter-mile oval, setting fast time in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials and winning a heat race prior to grabbing his 47th career WoO LMS A-Main victory. His perfect performance marked his second win in three starts behind the wheel of the new Rocket car he debuted at the start of the tour’s current Northeast swing.

The winningest driver in WoO LMS history pulled off his latest conquest without having to deal with McCreadie, who appeared primed to grab his fourth WoO LMS win of the season after he bolted into the lead from the outside pole at the start of the race. Lanigan didn’t rule out the possibility, however, that he could have challenged McCreadie if the 39-year-old hadn’t met a miserable fate on lap 28.

“I think we were running him down a little because I could see him coming to me,” said Lanigan, who started fourth. “Now whether he had problems then, I don’t know. He might have been having rearend problems then.

“Even if we got there (to McCreadie), it was gonna be hard to pass him. But our car was good, and I’d liked to have raced with him.”

Smith kept Lanigan honest following McCreadie’s departure, but Lanigan never felt any serious pressure.

“I knew Clint was back there, but I knew I had a little bit of a lead there at the end,” said Lanigan. “As long as I ran my own race I was gonna be fine.”

Smith, who started fifth, was a very satisfied runner-up. It was by far his best run of the 2013 WoO LMS campaign; in the 20 events prior to Cornwall, he hadn’t recorded a single top-five finish.

“I’ll be honest with you – the way we’ve been running, it’s like a win,” said Smith, who gained control of second place on lap 31 when his good buddy, Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., slipped over the outside berm between turns one and two while challenging Lanigan and tumbled out of the top five. “I’m trying to stay on tour (with the WoO LMS), and a $5,000 night is a big step for me. That’s like a sponsorship compared to the $1,200 I’ve been getting (for finishing deep in the field). That’s like running five races in a row in one night. It definitely makes a big difference in where we’re going.”

Smith credited his strong run to Lanigan, who provided setup tips that dialed in his familiar No. 44.

“I got back on Darrell’s kind of setup program tonight,” said Smith. “He helped me last year a lot, but this year we’ve been running good around home so I was trying to bring that program out here on the road. It just ain’t good in this part of the country, and I feel like I just lost my way a little bit with setup over the past three or four races.

“I got with Darrell and he helped me get everything back right tonight – so even if I could get to him, I hated to race him hard because he helped me get what I was getting. If he’d have given it to me I’d have took it, but I wasn’t gonna do no slide-jobs or nothing to try and pass him.”

Smith did close in on Lanigan when the leader was in lapped traffic late in the distance, but the lap 47 caution flag effectively dashed his hopes.

“(Lanigan) had destroyed his right-rear tire racing with Fuller early in the race and I still had a good tire, so my car was a little more positive and a little more steady anywhere I wanted to go,” said Smith. “He kind of had to run a dedicated circle and keep his car pulling because he knew his tire was in bad shape, so he couldn’t move around the lapped cars as well as I could. That allowed me to gain on him, but in open track (after the caution) he was still Darrell Lanigan. He was rollin’.”

Finishing in positions 6-10 was WoO LMS rookie Morgan Bagley of Longview, Texas, whose sixth-place run matched his best tour finish of 2013; Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., who finished in the same spot he started; Rick Eckert of York, Pa.; Fuller, who started from the pole position but never led a lap and fell from contention when he lost ground while bidding to overtake Lanigan on lap 31; and points leader Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., who started eighth and was never a factor at a track where he won WoO LMS A-Mains in 2008 and ’09.

The race’s five caution flags were caused by relatively minor incidents. John Mason of Millersburg, Ohio, and Dan Stone of Thompson, Pa., tangled in turn one on the opening lap; Larry Wight of Phoenix, N.Y., slid off the track between turns three and four on lap three; WoO LMS rookie Eric Wells of Hazard, Ky., spun off turn three with a flat right-rear tire on lap 18; McCreadie needed wrecker service after losing the race on lap 28; and Adam Turner of Picton, Ont., spun in turn four on lap 47.

Twenty-six cars were entered in the event, which brought the WoO LMS back to Ron Morin’s Cornwall Motor Speedway for the first time since 2010. There was no race scheduled in 2011 and last year’s event was rained out.

Lanigan’s quick lap of 12.708 seconds in time trials was his third fast-time honor of 2013.

Heat winners were Lanigan, McCreadie and McCool. Stone captured the B-Main after his Leo Milus-owned ‘Super Deuce’ car was sidelined during heat action by a busted distributor.

The WoO LMS continues touring the Northeast on Tuesday night (June 25) at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park.

LIVE UPDATES 6/23: World of Outlaws Late Model Series At Cornwall Motor Speedway

CORNWALL, ONT – June 23, 2013 – The World of Outlaws Late Model Series continues its swing north of the border tonight, returning to Cornwall Motor Speedway for a 50-lap, $10,000-to-win event.

A quarter-mile-mile oval that headlines DIRTcar 358-Modified racing on a weekly basis, Cornwall is running its fourth WoO LMS show alltime but first since 2010. The tour visited the track annually from 2008-2010, then wasn’t on the ’11 schedule and had its ’12 program rained out.

It’s Darrell again

10:25 p.m. – Darrell Lanigan benefitted from a dose of good fortune to win his second consecutive World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Main on Canadian soil.

After race-long leader Tim McCreadie had his full straightaway edge over Lanigan wiped out by a lap-28 caution flag, the restart saw McCreadie slow with mechanical trouble and spin into the infield on the homestretch. Lanigan inherited the top spot and led the rest of the way, turning back a late threat from a hungry Clint Smith to capture the 50-lap event.

Smith finished a season-best second, 1.703 seconds behind Lanigan. Bub McCool was third, Billy Decker came on strong to place fourth and Shane Clanton completed the top five.

A-Main Finish: 1. Darrell Lanigan, 2. Clint Smith, 3. Bub McCool, 4. Billy Decker, 5. Shane Clanton, 6. Morgan Bagley, 7. Chub Frank, 8. Rick Eckert, 9. Tim Fuller, 10. Josh Richards, 11. Greg Oakes, 12. Eric Wells, 13. Dan Stone, 14. Larry Wight, 15. John Mason, 16. Lee Ladouceur, 17. Greg Belyea, 18. Philip Potts, 19. Adam Turner, 20. Kyle Sopaz, 21. Tim McCreadie, 22. Charlie Sandercock, 23. Jason McCrory, 24. Gil Tegg Jr.

Feature time

9:05 p.m. – Not long after Dan Stone won the B-Main over Lee Ladouceur, Adam Turner and Kyle Sopaz, WoO LMS officials blew the eight-minute horn to line up the A-Main. With a DIRTcar 358-Modified consolation race just ending, the WoO LMS machines will soon be heading onto the racetrack.

A-Main Lineup:

Row 1: Tim Fuller/Tim McCreadie
Row 2: Bub McCool/Darrell Lanigan
Row 3: Clint Smith/Shane Clanton
Row 4: Chub Frank/Josh Richards
Row 5: Rick Eckert/Billy Decker
Row 6: Greg Belyea/Greg Oakes
Row 7: Charlie Sandercock/Morgan Bagley
Row 8: Eric Wells/Gil Tegg Jr.
Row 9: John Mason/Philip Potts
Row 10: Dan Stone/Lee Ladouceur
Row 11: Adam Turner/Kyle Sopaz
Row 12: Larry Wight/Jason McCrory

Heat Race Notes

8:45 p.m. – Darrell Lanigan, Tim McCreadie and Bub McCool were victorious in the three 10-lap heats…. With a significant hole developing on the inside of turn one and cars throwing water from a puddle on the infield onto the track surface, drivers faced some obstacles. The first heat was especially eventful with four caution flags needed…. Billy Decker was the first to encounter problems in Heat 1, spinning between turns one and two on the initial start. Dan Stone’s car then lost power on the restart, forcing him to the pit area. Finally, Larry Wight brought out a lap-one caution by going over the outside berm in turns one and two – and then five laps later, Wight spun in turn one after catching the rut and smashing the nose of his car…. Canadian Sprint Car racer Lee Ladouceur’s dirt Late Model debut was inauspicious as he spun in turn four on lap one of the second heat and collected Caley Weese…. Morgan Bagley had to go to the rear of the field in heat two after he spun on a lap-one restart trying to avoid Tim Fuller, who got sideways but was able to gather his car and continue…. Fuller went on to draw the pole position for the 50-lap A-Main. He’ll share the front row with his fellow big-block Modified veteran McCreadie…. Radar indicates that there are showers approaching the Cornwall area from the west, so officials are pushing the show along in an effort to beat Mother Nature. The feature redraw was done in the pit area to save time, and the B-Main is already on the racetrack…

Lanigan quick

7:30 p.m. – After twice experiencing transponder problems during Ohlins Shocks Time Trials, Darrell Lanigan finally clicked off an official lap of 12.708 seconds to convincingly set fast time for the third time this season.

Lanigan will start from the pole position in the first of three 10-lap heat races, which will transfer six drivers from each and move the top-two finishers on to the A-Main redraw. Also earning pole position starting spots in heats were Tim McCreadie (second-fastest at 13.034 seconds) and Bub McCool (third-fastest at 13.058 seconds).

Shane Clanton was able to get his backup car on the track for time trials, but he only managed to turn the 13th-fastest lap (13.519 seconds).

Complete results from time trials can be seen here.

Problems for Clanton

6:45 p.m. – There’s a mad scramble going on in the pit stall of Shane Clanton, who broke an engine in hot laps and had to hastily pull out his backup car.

With Clanton’s crewmen receiving assistance from his teammate Tim Fuller’s mechanics and those affiliated with other teams, the driver who enters tonight’s action ranked second in the WoO LMS points standings is hoping to get his backup machine ready in time to go out for time trials, which are now underway.

Look out for Stoney

6:35 p.m. – Dan Stone flashed some speed in hot laps, clocking in at 13.096 seconds to top the speed charts in the ‘Super Deuce’ machine.

Tim McCreadie was second-fastest (13.240), followed by Gypsum Racing teammates Larry Wight (13.382), Billy Decker (13.439) and Chub Frank (13.517).

Cars are now being lined up for the start of Ohlins Shocks Time Trials.

Loss for Richards family

6:15 p.m. – The WoO LMS sends its condolences to longtime team owner Mark Richards, whose mother, Goldie, passed away yesterday at the age of 95 following several years of declining health.

With services for Mark’s mother set for Wednesday, Mark and his son Josh are planning to return home for the funeral on the off-day between WoO LMS events at Canandaigua, N.Y., and Lernerville Speedway.

Getting ready

5:40 p.m. – A 26-car field has been signed in for tonight’s action, which isn’t far off as WoO LMS race director Bret Emrick is currently conducting the drivers’ meeting.

The roster includes 11 WoO LMS regulars plus Dan Stone; Gypsum Racing teammates Billy Decker and Larry Wight; Ohio’s John Mason; New Yorkers Greg Oakes and Gil Tegg Jr. (in a second Oakes car); Canadian Greg Belyea driving Chub Frank’s second car; and 2012 Southern Ontario Sprints Series champion Lee Ladouceur of Alexandria, Ont., who is jumping into Belyea’s own No. 25.

Off-day excursions

5:15 p.m. – With the WoO LMS idle for two days after Thursday night’s show at Brighton (Ont.) Speedway, teams spread out to find some things to pass their time.

Josh Richards and the Rocket Chassis house car team headed for the water of the St. Lawrence Seaway, renting a small fishing boat in Gananoque, Ont., for a relaxing Friday afternoon cruise through the Thousand Islands. The quartet of Richards, his father Mark and crewmen Matt Barnes and Cody Duncan didn’t fare all that well in the fish-catching department, however.

“We basically floated around with poles in the water for about four hours,” quipped Josh Richards, whose team moved on to spend Saturday at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino in Hogansburg, N.Y., just across the St. Lawrence from Cornwall. “I caught one fish and Cody caught one, but that’s it. We had a great time, though.”

Several teams went to a racetrack on Friday night – and four WoO LMS travelers even got behind the wheel. Tour veterans Chub Frank and Clint Smith and ace mechanic Jason Jameson, who runs a dirt Late Model when he’s not overseeing Darrell Lanigan’s team, picked up rides for Friday’s Go Nuclear Crate Late Model Series event at Mohawk International Raceway in Hogansburg, N.Y., while Tim Fuller hopped into a DIRTcar 358-Modified at Mohawk. Tim McCreadie also attended Friday’s action at Mohawk to help his 23-year-old brother Jordan, who races weekly there in the 358-Modified division.

Frank had the best night at Mohawk, winning the Go Nuclear Series feature in Canadian Greg Belyea’s car for a $1,000 payday. Smith finished second in Shane Tenace’s machine, while Jameson dropped out due to an overheating car while running in the top five. Fuller, meanwhile, charged from the 16th starting spot to second place in the 358-Modified headliner before mechanical trouble knocked him out with three laps remaining.

Frank was back in Belyea’s crate car on Saturday night for a Go Nuclear event at Brockville Ontario Speedway and finished third. Smith also attended the race but didn’t compete; he provided pit-area assistance to Tenace’s effort instead.

Changing cars

4:55 p.m. – After recording back-to-back top-five WoO LMS finishes (second on June 19 at Fonda, N.Y., fourth on June 20 at Brighton, Ont.) driving his own Rocket No. 21d, Thompson, Pa.’s Dan Stone has unloaded the Leo Milus-owned ‘Super Deuce’ Rocket for tonight’s program. This is the same machine that Stone drove to a Firecracker 100 preliminary A-Main victory last year at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa.

With the car switch, Stone also has some additional crew help too. Randy Kisacky, the noted DIRTcar big-block Modified crew chief who oversees preparation of Milus’s No. 2 for selected events with Stone, and his brother-in-law Tom Boyd have driven up from their homes in the Binghamton, N.Y., area to lend a hand.

Stone is planning to run the ‘Super Deuce’ for the remainder of the current WoO LMS swing, including Tuesday night’s show at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park and Lernerville’s Firecracker 100 weekend June 27-29.

Give Ron a break, Mother Nature

4:05 p.m. – Some light rain rolled over the track a few hours ago and there remains a chance for a pop-up thunderstorm late this afternoon, but it appears that the precipitation that was dancing along the St. Lawrence Seaway has dropped to the south — good news for tonight’s action.

It’s also a welcomed developed for longtime Cornwall owner and promoter Ron Morin, who has struggled to get his 2013 season rolling because of wet weather. Morin has had four of his five scheduled events washed out so far this season — not a good success percentage, especially for a Canadian track with a shorter window of opportunity to conduct races.

Morin said the one race that was run this season at Cornwall attracted a near record crowd, but that doesn’t make up for four rainouts. He’s confident that his fortunes will change tonight, with the weather staying dry and a big turnout of fans coming to Cornwall for WoO LMS competition.

The Cornwall bullring (pictured below in its entirety) has always produced spectacular WoO LMS racing, so anticipation is high for tonight’s event.

Coming alive

3:50 p.m. – The pit area’s gates swung open a short time ago and haulers are now streaming into the track to park.
