Lanigan Slips By McCreadie In Final Laps For ‘Buckeye Classic’ Victory At Wayne County Speedway

World of Outlaws Late Model Series Points Leader Scores Third Win Of 2012

By Kevin Kovac, WoO LMS P.R. Director

ORRVILLE, OH – May 25, 2012 – Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., returned to his winning ways on Friday night, slipping by Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., with a dramatic late-race pass to capture the World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Buckeye Classic’ at NAPA Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway.

The former series champion overtook McCreadie for the lead on lap 47 of the 50-lap A-Main and rolled on to his third triumph of 2012. No other driver has won more than once through 12 events this season.

“We’ve been running good, but it’s been a while since we won,” said Lanigan, who entered Friday’s action with nine top-five finishes but winless since topping the first two races of the ’12 WoO LMS campaign in February. “It feels good to get back in Victory Lane.”

Lanigan, who turns 42 on June 3, worked hard for his 29th career WoO LMS triumph – a score that gave him sole possession of second place on the national tour’s win list since 2004, breaking a tie with Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky. He started seventh and needed nearly the entire distance to reach the front of the pack.

After hustling his Rocket machine up to fourth by lap seventh, Lanigan ran in the position until passing early leader Walker Arthur of Forest, Va., for third on lap 30. He inherited second when WoO LMS rookie Bub McCool of Vicksburg, Miss., retired during a lap-32 caution period due to a broken rear axle and then took up the chase of McCreadie.

McCreadie, 38, appeared primed to register his second win in the last three WoO LMS events after grabbing the lead from Arthur on lap 22, but he struggled after the race’s third and final restart, on lap 41, and was unable to hold off Lanigan.

Lanigan flashed under the checkered flag 1.562 seconds ahead of McCreadie, who steered the Sweeteners Plus Warrior to his third consecutive finish among the top four.

Fifth-starter Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., rallied to place third in his Rocket after falling as far back as eighth. McCreadie’s teammate, Vic Coffey of Caledonia, N.Y., advanced from the 14th starting spot to finish fourth in a Rocket car and Arthur, who started second and led laps 1-21 in his first-ever start at Wayne County, settled for a WoO LMS career-best run of fifth driving a MasterSbilt chassis.

“There at the end our tires came in a little bit better,” Lanigan said of the key to his $10,650 victory. “We had a little bit harder tire than they did. They faded, and we got better.”

Lanigan’s patience paid off in the first WoO LMS event since 2006 at Wayne County. A big crowd watched him duck underneath McCreadie for the lead with just three laps remaining.

“There at the beginning where we jumped up to fourth, and we kind of rode there for a little while, I was kind of like just holding my own with that tire,” said Lanigan, who extended his WoO LMS points lead to 86 points over ninth-place finisher Rick Eckert of York, Pa. “Then once (the track) blackened up pretty good that tire came on.

“I knew (McCreadie) was a little softer on rubber and he was getting a little loose. I kind of knew right then that we had a shot at it.”

McCreadie might have been doomed by the lap-41 caution flag for Shane McLoughlin of Nashport, Ohio, who spun on the inside of the backstretch.

“I didn’t need the restart,” said McCreadie, who started third. “I think the restarts hurt me, but I don’t know what to say. We just got beat – it’s that simple. (Lanigan) did a helluva job. I tried to drive back around him going into (turn) three, but I just couldn’t stick out there.

“We’re running better, though – way better. It’s a far cry from how we’ve been all year. It took us two months to get good.”

The 50-year-old Frank, meanwhile, fell short of adding another Wayne County win to his resume. He won five touring-series events at the track from 1999-2006, including the track’s only previous WoO LMS show in ’06.

“We just didn’t have anything for (Lanigan and McCreadie), but they were racing pretty hard so anything could happen,” said Frank, who reached third place when he passed Arthur on a lap-32 restart. “I was just trying to stay in contact with them in case they got together. If they opened up a hole, I would go for it.”

Finishing in positions 6-10 was fourth-starter Steve Shaver of Vienna, W.Va.; George Lee of Loudonville, Ohio, who drew loud cheers from his home crowd when he won a heat and drew the pole position for the A-Main but slipped to seventh in the final rundown; Ron Davies of Warren, Pa.; Eckert, who was never a factor after starting eighth; and 18th-starter Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga.

The race’s three caution flags were caused by minor incidents. In addition to McLoughlin’s problem on lap 41, Doug Drown of Wooster, Ohio, stopped in turn four on lap 21 and Gregg Satterlee spun between turns one and two on lap 32.

Forty-four cars entered the event on a hot day at the Ohio track, which was purchased last year by Joe McIlvaine and is promoted by the husband-and-wife team of Jason and Kristin Flory.

Lightning that danced across the sky during the A-Main signaled the strong storms that threatened to the north, but the precipitation stayed away until the racing program was completed.

Shaver was fastest in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials, turning a lap of 18.723 seconds for his sixth career WoO LMS quick-time honor.

Heat winners were Shaver, Lee, Lanigan and Frank. Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., and Smith captured the B-Mains.

The WoO LMS Memorial Day weekend tripleheader continues on Saturday night (May 26) with the $25,000-to-win ‘Jackpot 100’ at Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne, W.Va., and Sunday evening at I-77 Raceway Park in Ripley, W.Va.

Racing to beat the weather

9:20 p.m. – After Mike Marlar and Clint Smith won the B-Mains, teams are scurrying to get in line for the A-Main with rain in the vicinity.

A-Main Lineup:

Row 1: George Lee/Walker Arthur
Row 2: Tim McCreadie/Steve Shaver
Row 3: Chub Frank/Bub McCool
Row 4: Darrell Lanigan/Rick Eckert
Row 5: Ron Davies/Devin Moran
Row 6: Jack Sullivan/Kent Robinson
Row 7: John Lobb/Vic Coffey
Row 8: Corey Conley/Gregg Satterlee
Row 9: Mike Marlar/Clint Smith
Row 10: Brandon Sheppard/Steve Casebolt
Row 11: Ryan Markham/Doug Drown
Row 12: Shane Clanton/Pat Doar
Row 13: Shane McLoughlin/Greg Johnson

Clanton is using a provisional after experiencing an awful night; he lost a wheel during qualifying and got no time, putting him behind for the evening.

The General stirs up the crowd

8:55 p.m. – George Lee, the local favorite known as ‘The General,’ drew a rise from the the big crowd when he drew the pole position for the A-Main. He’s a verypopular local, and he’s riding high after winning a heat and grabbing the number one pill in the redraw.

Walker Arthur, a young driver from Forest, Va., who’s making his first-ever visit to Wayne County, will start from the outside pole.

The first B-Main is now on the racetrack. With some weather concerns just to the north and, farther out, to the west, officials are pushing the show along.

Heats complete

8:30 p.m. – The four heat winners — Steve Shaver, local George Lee, Darrell Lanigan and Chub Frank — plus runners-up Tim McCreadie, Rick Eckert, Walker Arthur and Bub McCool will be taking part in the redraw for the top-eight spots in the A-Main shortly.

Devin Moran slipped from his pole starting spot in heat two to a third-place finish, but he still transferred to the A-Main. His father Donnie, however, finished seventh in the first heat and will have to run a B-Main.

Complete heat-race finishes can be found here.

Speedy Shaver

Vienna, W.Va.’s Steve Shaver was quickest in time trials driving the K&L Rumley No. 6, turning a lap of 18.723 seconds to register his sixth career WoO LMS fast-time honor. He thwarted the hopes of Devin Moran, the 17-year-old son of dirt Late Model legend Donnie Moran who sat at the top of the time-trial board for much of the session in pursuit of his first-ever WoO LMS fast-time.

The time trial results can be found here.

It’s now 7:55 p.m., and the first of four 10-lap heat races is hitting the track.

Late arrival

Chub Frank was last the WoO LMS regular to pull into Wayne County’s pits, arriving shortly before the 6 p.m. drivers’ meeting.

The reason for Frank’s tardiness? A pet emergency. This morning around 11:30 — shortly before Frank planned to leave his Bear Lake, Pa., shop for Ohio — one of his two Chiuauas, Champ, was injured in the garage when it ran in front of a truck being moved by a crewman. Champ’s one side appeared to be ‘skinned’ of fur so he needed immediate medical attention, but with his regular vet closed for the holiday weekend it took Frank and his wife, Mary, nearly 45 minutes to find an office to treat him. Once they were finally able to drop Champ off for treatment, the Franks rushed back to the shop and jumped into their rig for the haul.

Ready to go

6:35 p.m. – Forty-four cars are signed in for action and the first group of hot laps is getting ready to take to the racetrack. Ohlins Shocks Time Trials will begin immediately after practice, and then four 10-lap heats (transferring four from each) and two 12-lap B-Mains (with three qualifying from each) will lead into the 50-lap ‘Buckeye Classic’ that pays $10,000 to win.

Running on fumes

Ron Davies, a 2011 WoO LMS regular who is keeping a more regional schedule this year, is in the pits and ready to chase his first career win on the tour at a track where he was victorious in weekly show just a couple weeks ago.

And make no mistake — the 54-year-old Davies wants to be here. He’s going on just a few hours of sleep in order to go racing tonight.

Davies and his son Dan, who is also here tonight to compete in the supporting open-wheel Modified event, entered ULMS shows in their respective divisions last night at McKean County Raceway in East Smethport, Pa. Both were involved in feature accidents, forcing them to pull all-nighters to make it to Wayne County. They left McKean County, unloaded their wrecked cars at their nearby shop in Warren, Pa., and then worked straight through until a bit after 9 a.m. before heading out on the four-hour drive to Wayne County. Ron handled all the driving of his hauler.

The new Rocket Man

052512_SheppardOne week after registering a weekly-show feature win at Wayne County in his debut behind the wheel of the Rocket Chassis house car, Brandon Sheppard returns for his first WoO LMS event under the watchful eye of team owner Mark Richards. The 19-year-old was impressive in last week’s Wayne County run, charging forward from the eighth starting spot to take the lead in just eight laps — and prompting Richards to intimate that he saw a little bit of his son, two-time WoO LMS champ-turned-NASCAR Nationwide Series racer Josh Richards, in Sheppard.

The low-key Sheppard has already cast aside that victory, placing his focus on the matter at hand. He’s been immersed in working with Richards’s crew for nearly two weeks as he’s left behind his home in New Berlin, Ill., to spend an indefinite period of time at the Rocket shop in Shinnston, W.Va.

“We’ve been keeping him busy,” said Rocket Chassis crewman Matt Barnes. “He’s been working all day and sleeping in the truck every night.”

How’s Sheppard adjusted to the Mountaineer State? “It’s pretty hilly,” he bottom-lined. “Definitely not flat like the Midwest.”

Inside info

WoO LMS regular Pat Doar is making his first-ever visit to Wayne County, but he’s not going into battle totally blind at a track 14 hours from his home in New Richmond, Wis. After all, his new mechanic, Cody Duncan, literally grew up attending races at the speedway.

052512_DoarCodyDuncan, 19, is the son of Charlie Duncan, a veteran dirt Late Model racer from nearby Wooster, Ohio. Two months ago Doar asked a longtime friend from Ohio, driver Keith Berner, if he knew anyone interested in going out on the road as a crewman, and Berner suggested the teenage Duncan, who met up with Doar for the first time at Farmer City (Ill.) Raceway’s late-March ‘Illini 100.’ Cody has been with Doar ever since, staying with Doar in Wisconsin and traveling the circuit.

The quiet Duncan has been alongside his father for many races at Wayne County, so Doar is hoping that some of the kid’s knowledge of the track rubs off on him. The struggling 2011 WoO LMS Rookie of the Year could certainly use the boost.

“We’re arguing right now about the gear to run,” Doar quipped moments ago. He added with a smile, “The pressure’s on him to get us going tonight.”

For Duncan, whose father has been struggling this season and is not racing tonight, the visit to Wayne County is a homecoming of sorts. He has been renewing acquaintances with many family members and friends in the pit area, all of them congratuling him on his new position with a WoO LMS team.

Strong field building

4:15 p.m. – On summer-like Friday that is producing record-high temperatures in the high 80s in east-central Ohio, more than 30 cars are already parked in the Wayne County Speedway pit area for the track’s first WoO LMS event since 2006.

In addition to 16 WoO LMS travelers, drivers ready for battle include Brandon Sheppard (making his first WoO LMS start in the Rocket Chassis house car), Steve Shaver, Donnie and Devin Moran, Steve Casebolt, Ron Davies, Russell King, Gregg Satterlee, Jon Henry, Jared Hawkins, Walker Arthur, George Lee, Wayne Maffett Jr., Keith Berner and Ryan Markham.
