Lanigan Continues World of Outlaws Late Model Series Onslaught With ‘Fulton Bank 50’ Victory At Delaware International Speedway
Points Leader Rolls To Third Win In Last Four Starts On National Tour, Fifth Of 2012 Season

DELMAR, DE – May 31, 2012 – Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., continued his World of Outlaws Late Model Series onslaught on Thursday night at Delaware International Speedway, dominating the ‘Fulton Bank 50’ for his third win in the last four races.
Racing just three days before his 42nd birthday, Lanigan blasted forward from the sixth starting spot to take the lead from Austin Hubbard of Seaford, Del., on lap 18 and never looked back. He easily handled two restarts over the remaining distance to pad his already substantial points lead with his series-leading fifth victory of the 2012 season.
With the $10,650 triumph, Lanigan pushed his earnings through 15 WoO LMS events this season to a resounding $115,700. No other driver has won even half that amount – and Lanigan remains the only driver with more than one win on the circuit.
“Everything is just clicking for us right now,” said Lanigan, who won for the third time in eight WoO LMS starts at Delaware International and the 31st time overall in his career on the series. “The car, the engine, my crew – we’re just on a roll. We’re having fun.”
The 20-year-old Hubbard settled for second place after leading laps 1-17, crossing the finish line 1.940 seconds behind Lanigan at a half-mile oval located less than 20 minutes from his home. It was the best finish in five career WoO LMS starts at DIS for the national tour’s 2010 Rookie of the Year.
Defending WoO LMS champion Rick Eckert of York, Pa., started from the pole position but slipped to third at the checkered flag. Ricky Elliott of Seaford, Del., advanced from the 17th starting spot to place fourth and ninth-starter Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, Ga., was fifth for his first top-five run on the WoO LMS since Feb. 25 at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla.
Lanigan’s victory completed a very successful four-race stretch, which also included wins on May 25 at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio, and May 26 at Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne, W.Va. ($25,000-plus ‘Jackpot 100’). A sixth-place finish on May 27 at I-77 Raceway Park in Ripley, W.Va., was his only slight stumble.
The 2008 WoO LMS champion was on his game at Delaware International, a track where he is the only driver to win more than one World of Outlaws A-Main. He simply blasted the outside of the track to reach the front in his Cornett-powered Rocket machine.
“It was on a rail,” said Lanigan, who outdueled Eckert for second on a lap-15 restart and sailed by Hubbard just three circuits later. “We could go right around the top there. I passed ’em all right around the top. You usually don’t get to do that here.
“It was unbelievable out there on that outside. It was a great track – I can’t believe the track came around like that.”
Hubbard’s attempt to make the inside lane work at one of the track opened the door for Lanigan to surge into the lead.
“I moved down (in turns three and four) after that (lap-15) restart and it felt good,” said Hubbard, who started from the outside pole in his father’s Rocket car. “I said, ‘I’ll just go to the top down here (one and two) and the bottom down there (three and four,’ and then Darrell just blew by me. Then I was like, ‘I guess I’ll move up.'”
The race ended just in time for Hubbard, whose engine began going sour late in the distance and finally broke on the final lap.
Eckert, 46, wished he could have a mulligan on his tire selection..
“I beat myself in the pit area,” said Eckert, who won last year’s WoO LMS A-Main at Delaware International. “We run the same tires we had last year, and they changed the racetrack up a good bit. It was a good bit faster around the top than it has been in the past, and I was a little too tight to be up there.
“That was the first time we started up front in a long time so you’re a little bitter about not winning, but we just got beat in the pits. It was a tire choice, and I made the wrong one.”
Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., started fourth and briefly climbed as high as second early in the A-Main but ultimately fell to sixth at the finish. Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., battled his car to a seventh-place finish and David Williams of Chaptico, Md, placed eighth to earn the $500 WoO LMS ‘Bonus Bucks’ cash for being the highest-finshing driver who hasn’t won a tour A-Main and isn’t ranked among the top 12 in the points standings. Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., was ninth and Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga., who used a provisional to start the A-Main, took 10th.
Five caution flags slowed the event, including a multi-car tangle in turn four on a lap-15 restart that involved Bub McCool of Vicksburg, Miss., Gregg Satterlee of Rochester Mills, Pa., Darryl Hills of Great Mills, Md., Donnie Lingo Jr. of Millsboro, Del., and Richard Jarvis Jr. of Powellville, Md.
Thirty-four cars were signed in for the event, the tour’s eighth visit to DIS in the last nine years.
Jamie Lathroum of Mechanicsville, Md., was quickest in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials, turning a lap of 18.257 seconds to earn his first-ever WoO LMS fast-time honor. He went on to win a heat race as well, but his A-Main run came to an end on lap 33 due to a broken rearend as he ran seventh.
Joining Lathroum as heat winners were Lanigan, McCool and Eckert. The B-Mains were captured by Elliott Tim Fuller.
Heat action was marred by a wild crash during the third preliminary involving Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., whose car hopped the berm between turns one and two and rolled several times. He said he had a slight headache but was otherwise uninjured.
Smith was done for the night, abruptly ending his hopes of improving upon the pair of runner-up finishes he registered in his two previous WoO LMS starts at Delaware International, in 2009 and ’10.
The WoO LMS will return to action in two weeks, contesting a weekend doubleheader on June 16 at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway and June 17 at Eriez Speedway in Hammett, Pa.

No. 5 for Lanigan
Darrell Lanigan continued to dominate the WoO LMS, charging forward from the sixth starting spot to win the Fulton Bank 50. He overtook Austin Hubbard for the lead on lap 18 and never looked back, rolling to a 1.940-second triumph over Hubbard.
It’s the fifth win of the season for Lanigan, the only driver with more than one win through 15 events.

Eckert on the pole
9:35 p.m. – With the B-Mains complete (Ricky Elliott and Tim Fuller were the winners), most of the A-Main starters are now checking out the racetrack that promoter Charlie Cathell manicured with his grader.
Rick Eckert will start from the pole position after the top-two finishers from each heat redrew a short time ago. The defending WoO LMS champion will be shooting for a virtual replay of the tour’s 2011 event at DIS, in which he blasted off the outside pole to lead the entire distance.
The outside polesitter will be Austin Hubbard, the 20-year-old who hails from just up the road in Seaford, Del. This will be by far Hubbard’s best opportunity to win his home track’s WoO LMS event. In four previous World of Outlaws starts here his best starting spot was ninth (in ’09, when he finished 17th) and his top finish was fourth (in ’10, when he started 19th).

The WoO LMS provisional spots go to Clint Smith and rookie Kent Robinson, whose night took a turn for the worse during qualifying when engine trouble forced him into a backup car for his heat.
Brady Smith flips
9:05 p.m. – The big news from the qualifying heats was the wild ride taken during the third prelim by Brady Smith, whose car rolled several times off the wall-less turns one and two.
“I went into one, got my car over the berm, and she tipped over,” said Smith, whose two previous WoO LMS visits to DIS resulted in runner-up finishes. “I went over at least a couple times. It was a pretty rough one. I got a little headache, but I’m O.K.”
Smith said his Team Zero by Bloomquist car sustained a broken rearend in the accident, and he figures there’s plenty more damage beyond that. He’s done for the night and will take stock of the machine when he gets back to Rick Eckert’s Pennsylvania shop, where he’ll work tomorrow in preparation for the beginning of Appalachian Mountain Speedweek.
The flip was the second of Smith’s career; his first came last year during the Firecracker 100 weekend at Lernerville Speedway. It also wasn’t the way he wanted to dive back into his dirt Late Model schedule. This was just his ninth start of the season — and only his third since February’s DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park.

7:55 p.m. – Jamie Lathroum of Mechanicsville, Md., who scored an upset victory in the 2009 WoO LMS event at DIS, registered his first career fast-time honor on the tour with a lap of 18.257 seconds. He’ll start on the pole of the first of four 10-lap qualifying heat races that is about to take the green flag.

WoO LMS traveler Jill George of Cedar Falls, Iowa, is absent from tonight’s action as she regroups following her vicious accident last Saturday night at West Virginia’s Tyler County Speedway (she’s still sore, but she’s back seeing patients at her chiropractic office), but there’s still a female representative in the field. And this lady has already made her mark at Delaware International.
Staci Warrington, a 21-year-old DIS regular from Milton, Del., will carry her gender’s torch tonight. She won last Saturday night’s dirt Late Model feature here, so she enters her home track’s biggest full-fender show of the year with plenty of confidence.
“I feel pretty good,” said Warrington, who is in her fifth season behind the wheel of a dirt Late Model. “We ran good on Saturday, but this is a tough field.”
Warrington has four career wins at DIS. She has entered the last four WoO LMS events at the speedway, but she’s fallen short of the A-Main in each attempt. Her best effort came in 2010, when she timed ninth-fastest — the best time-trial performance a female has turned in on the WoO LMS — and came up two spots short of transferring through the B-Main.
Ready to go
7:00 p.m. – Thirty-four cars are signed in for tonight’s action, and all the machines are now rolling onto the half-mile oval to pack the surface. Delaware International is, of course, known for its top-notch clay and fine track preparation by promoter Charlie Cathell.
5:25 p.m. – While sitting in the WoO LMS trailer to register moments ago, rookie Bub McCool reported that on Wednesday he and his crew went surf-fishing with Schaeffer’s Oil rep Alan Bradley along the Atlantic Ocean on Assateague Island, not far from Delaware International Speedway on the Maryland/Virginia border. They didn’t fare very well.
“I learned I’m no good at surf-fishing,” McCool quipped of the discipline that involves casting lines while standing in the shoreline surf. “I didn’t catch anything. All I know is that we had to stay up till 4 in the morning to get the car done because we spent the day fishing.”
McCool parked his hauler during the off days at the Seaford, Del., shop of 2010 WoO LMS Rookie of the Year Austin Hubbard, who will make his first WoO LMS start since February tonight.
Pits filling up
4:45 p.m. – More than 20 cars have already rolled into the Delaware International pit area, including 13 WoO LMS travelers (Lanigan, Eckert, Frank, Clanton, McCreadie, Coffey, Clint Smith, McCool, Doar, Kent Robinson, Fuller, Sullivan and Lobb); regional standouts such as Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., Gregg Satterlee of Rochester Mills, Pa., and Jeremy Miller of Gettysburg, Pa.; and Delaware talents Austin Hubbard, Ricky Elliott, Mark Byram, Donald Lingo Jr. and Staci Warrington, a young female racer who scored her fourth career dirt Late Model victory here last Saturday night.
Brady Smith plans to run the Appalachian Mountain Speedweek that begins tomorrow night in Pennsylvania, so he decided to make the haul east one day early to compete in tonight’s program. He finished second in both the 2009 and 2010 WoO LMS events at DIS.
With three off days for the WoO LMS after Sunday’s program at I-77 Raceway Park in Ripley, W.Va., several teams stayed on the road. Three drivers — Kennedy Motorsports teammates John Lobb and Shane Clanton and 2011 Rookie of the Year Pat Doar — spent the time working on their equipment in Georgetown, Del., at the shop of Lobb’s chief mechanic Ross Robinson.
Robinson, a 22-year-old who was a dirt Late Model regular at Delaware International from 2007-2010 and will enter tonight’s action in a family-owned car (see story on Robinson here), and his parents were spectacular hosts to their guests. His mother, Kim, provided them a couple nights of home-cooked meals, including hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken on Tuesday and a lasagna dinner on Wednesday.
3:45 p.m. – You couldn’t ask for better weather than Delaware International Speedway promoter Charlie Cathell has ordered up for tonight’s WoO LMS program. It’s partly sunny and about 80 degrees with a gentle breeze at the moment, and forecasts call for temperatures in the low 60s and no chance of rain tonight.
Haulers and fans are currently lining up outside the DIS gates, which will open at 4 p.m. Ticket-booths at Delaware are of the drive-thru variety, meaning race teams and spectators buy their grandstand and pit tickets from the comfort of their rigs and cars as they enter the grounds.
